homer is not a woke trend. im generally not the kind of person who gets offended easily. almost never, actually. someone can say something about me, about my body, about my life, about what i do, and most of the time i just move on. not everything touches me. but there is one thing that gets under my skin. when someone has an opinion without having the slightest idea what they are talking about. when someone speaks like they are enlightened, special, above everyone else, while really just walking behind whatever temporary trend the world is clapping for that week. and yes, im talking about christopher nolan. i used to respect him a lot. when i first heard he was making the odyssey, i was excited. like genuine excitement. a real dopamine rush. i thought maybe, finally, someone with a huge budget, huge tools, modern technology, and the attention of the entire world would approach homer with awe. not to copy him. to respect him. because homer was never “material” for a movie. you do not dress him up in whatever the current year wants to see. hollywood did not make him important. he was already bigger than every director who will ever try to touch him. in greece, we grow up with these texts. the iliad. the odyssey. we study them in school, we are examined on them, we are graded on them. and when i was a little girl, every time i had a class on either the iliad or the odyssey, my mind would run. i would see everything. homer writes in a way that puts images inside your head before you even have time to resist them. you do not need imax. you do not need a trailer. you do not funny, but also a little sad, to think that an average thirteen-year-old child in greece, reading homer at school, can imagine something more alive than a famous director with endless resources. i know creativity is different from mind to mind. i do not believe art should be locked in a museum. i do not believe every adaptation has to look like a school textbook. imagination should be free. but freedom without understanding is not art. it is arrogance. and that is what bothers me. someone can touch homer. fine. but touch him after you’ve actually understood the weight of what you’re holding. if you are given an epic that has survived thousands of years, you do not treat it like raw material for a modern message. you do not use it as a vehicle to prove how “correct” you are according to the trends of the moment. you do not take something that is part of a people’s language, education, memory, and culture, and flatten it into another product of the season. you enter with respect. you read it. then you read it again. you sit with it. you ask people who know more than you. you listen for a while. and then, eventually, maybe, you make something. and now the clever ones will come. “oh, eva, you’re just mad about the casting.” no. i am mad about the laziness. i am mad about the confidence of people who have not opened homer, but suddenly have loud opinions about what helen, achilles, the odyssey, the iliad, and greek mythology can or cannot be. i am mad that everything becomes surface level. someone sees one sentence trending on tiktok and suddenly thinks they have an argument. “homer never described her exactly.” as if that empties the whole text. as if genealogy, language, symbolism, culture, and memory do not matter. helen of troy was never only “a beautiful woman.” she is a symbol. a myth. the daughter of zeus and leda. the woman around whom one of the most destructive and poetic imagined events of the ancient world was built. and yes, homer’s language matters. “white-armed helen.” λευκώλενος ἑλένη. you can argue that “white” in homer can be poetic. fine. you can try to make it less literal if that helps your argument. fine. but you cannot pretend the text is empty. you cannot pretend there is no description, no context, no lineage, no aesthetic, no cultural imagination. the same with achilles. achilles was never only a warrior. homer does not only give him a body. he gives him a soul. violence and rage and emotion in one body. pride alongside a tenderness that doesn’t make sense unless you’ve actually read him. if you do not feel those things, you are not making achilles. you are borrowing a name. and before someone pretends not to understand me, this is not about hating an actor or a group of people. it is about taking greek mythology and acting like the source material is optional. that is the insult. art is being treated like a costume. something you put over a modern agenda, then expect everyone to clap for, because if they do not clap, they call you whatever label fits the week’s discourse. racist or transphobic or narrow-minded or whatever. and it doesn’t work on me. sometimes people do not react because they hate. sometimes they react because they love something and they are watching it get smaller and flatter and turned into content. homer is not content to me. he is something i had open on a school desk in greece before i was old enough to understand how much of me was inside it. the saddest part is that many people will never read homer. not because they do not deserve to. but because they do not have the time, the desire, the access, the education, or because the world moves too fast and everyone is tired. so what cinema and social media show them becomes the image inside their head. and that carries responsibility. for a lot of people, that movie will become the only homer they ever see. that is what annoys me. not because i want everything frozen in time. because if you are going to change something this old, this powerful, this tied to a culture, at least understand it first. budget is not understanding. and if someone reads all of this and still only understands that i have a problem with certain people, then they did not read me. they only read what they wanted to be angry about. if you cannot feel the difference between hate and protecting a culture, then maybe you are
