Why do you think he was so insecure? It was because he didn't understand his feelings. It only really became clear that he liked Mike, or at least it was implicitly shown, in season 3. Before that, it could be perceived as a very nice friendship. He was withdrawn, and as he himself said in the van scene, he felt like a mistake. So you're not going to tell me that if he felt like a mistake, it was because he accepted himself.

Am I the only one who realized after his conversation with Robin in episode 4 that Will's closure wasn't about having a partner, but about believing in and accepting himself? I admit the Duffers messed up the fifth season terribly, but they made this point clear from the start. Or maybe I just watched the show from a different perspective.
