@bugmanjones

I’m very good at finding insects, in fact I’m a professional. Books on shieldbugs, wasps, ants, dung, limericks. Shout ‘weird bug!’ to get my attention.

At certain times of the year hardbacks and paperbacks gather in swarms before being released out into the wild. Publication date 6 July.

I suspect this will become increasingly common in Scotland, especially around the coast. Once. Considered a scarce southern coastal species, it’s now widespread in England and moving into Wales too.

Yesterday on the Findhorn Hinterland I was surprised to find a tiny ladybird on the needles of a Scots pine. It was a species I hadn't seen, or even heard of, before - Adonis' ladybird (Hippodamia variegata) - for which there's only a few records in the north of Scotland.

@FritillaryLilly Probably has not eaten enough. The curled tail threat display usually accompanied by daub of faeces exuded as a droplet which would cover the pale tail nodes.

@KeithBishop64 Do you mind if I use your question and photo for my occasional column on house pests in Sunday Times? Pseudonym if you like.

@bugmanjones any idea what this is, they can fly but our outside cabin is infested with them?

@KeithBishop64 Scatopsidae or Bibionidae, variously fever flies for obscure reasons or St Mark’s flies because a large species appears around St Mark’s Day 25 April. Larvae in the soil, scavengers, or feeding on fungal mycelia. Often in pot plant compost. Harmless.

@indoors_remain Coleopterist’s skirt. I suggested to my textile artist son I’d like a waistcoat of that material several years ago, but it never materialized. Harrumph.

@bugmanjones Oh, how lovely! I particularly like the tapestry-looking ones on the lower left, but they're all brilliant :-)

Fabrics from yesterday’s Verrall Supper. Now in its 139th year. Dipterist George Verrall used to pay for his guests >300 in the early 20th century. They probably all wore wing collars and frock coats. Now you can more or less wear what you like, but you have to pay for yourself.

@JLowenWildlife Neither in East Dulwich. Colonies of the millipede occur on the rotting wooden fenders of Deptford Creek, just above the high tide mark. An incredibly harsh and exposed position.

A much-needed day out yesterday, with Will & Sarah. With thanks to Vanna B for info, we tracked down seven Snow Fleas at Felbrigg (one in a new area) and, while waiting around Bintree Mill, amused ourselves with scores of Bristly Millipedes on the walls. Stunning inverts, both.

@RoseNWF @iancbeavis @BritishBugs Still none in East Dulwich. But I’m expecting them any time soon. The appearance of winged specimens of an insect named Pyrrhocoris apterus for its normally apterous wingless state is thought to be one reason its recent spread has expanded so rapidly. Fantastic beast.

On such a lovely warm sunny afternoon I was hoping for a butterfly perhaps around Badbury Rings approach, but no luck. However I did spot this Bloody nosed beetle in the rough grass.

Started in 2023 I have today sent 100,000 words and 342 illustrations on woodlice to the publishers. I will now have a cup of tea and some ginger nuts.
