I formally express my serious concern regarding the repeated use of a xenophobic term by Andreas Krieg, who publicly presents himself as an academic affiliated with @KingsCollegeLon @KingsMiddleEast as a specialist in Gulf affairs. The use of such language is deeply inappropriate, derogatory, and wholly inconsistent with the standards of professionalism, academic integrity, and cultural respect that one would expect from a scholar associated with a leading international institution. The term in question is not a neutral descriptor, nor is it acceptable academic shorthand. It is a reductive and xenophobic expression that trivialises and demeans an entire region and its people. This matter is particularly serious because Andreas’ commentary is not being made in a private capacity devoid of institutional context. He publicly identifies himself with King’s College London, and in doing so, his words inevitably reflect upon the institution with which he is affiliated. When an academic who claims expertise on the Gulf chooses to use dismissive and offensive language toward the very region he comments on, it raises legitimate concerns about prejudice, professionalism, and the standards being upheld under the banner of your university. I therefore request the following: 1.A clear and public apology from Andreas Krieg for the use of this derogatory term. 2.Confirmation that King’s College London does not endorse such language or the attitudes it conveys. 3.Assurance that this matter will be reviewed appropriately in line with the university’s professional and ethical standards for public conduct. Universities that position themselves as global institutions, and that engage with regions such as the Gulf in teaching, research, and policy discourse, carry a particular responsibility to ensure that such engagement is grounded in respect rather than condescension.
