Most tokens are smart contracts deployed on top of a chain. B20 tokens are native to Base - built directly into the protocol. The B20 Native Token Standard explained 🧵

Everyone's been asking about B20 launching on Base. here I break down the six concepts that make it worth paying attention to.

And this is just the start. B20 tokens are set to get even better performance in Base's next upgrade, Cobalt. Even lower fees and more throughput for any token built on the standard 👀

B20 ships in two variants: >ASSET: a general-purpose token with configurable decimals. >STABLECOIN: built for fiat-backed assets with fixed decimals and a set currency code.

The tools issuers need are baked into the standard: >Supply caps >Pause switches >Role based access control >Freeze and recover funds for compliance workflows

Normally, launching a token means writing a contract, securing an audit, and hoping nothing was missed. B20 turns that into one transaction, while maintaining full ERC-20 parity. Supply cap, admin, and minting are configured at launch without needing to build separate tools.

The B20 Token Standard launch is delayed due to a Github outage. We still expect to launch today, and will update as we go live.

On June 25 and 26, Base mainnet experienced two block production outages, both caused by the same underlying bug in the block builder logic. With the recent network stability issues, we're pushing back the B20 Activation Registry mainnet enablement to ensure a smooth rollout. Sepolia and Vibenet remain on track. We'll share a revised date shortly.

Blocks are being produced normally, and we have verified widespread recovery in the ecosystem. Any remaining stuck Base nodes will recover upon restart and syncing. The team has found the root cause for this halt and we’ll share a full post mortem based on our learnings and fixes as a top priority.

Blocks are being produced and we’re seeing apps and infrastructure coming back online as their Base nodes are restarted and synced. Recovery should be quick for each app/infrastrucure provider once the node restarts are initiated. Thank you all for your patience while we got this resolved.

Base Mainnet is currently halted while the team works on an issue with block production. All funds are secure, and we’ll update below once resolved. Appreciate the patience while we get it fixed.
