The Al-Qaeda terrorist and suspected mastermind of the 7/7 bombing in London 2005 in which 52 people were killed and 800 wounded, Haroon Aswat, was released early from psychiatric prison last year “after his schizophrenia improved.” UK judges ruled for his release from psychiatric care, overriding police and security services’ warnings that he was still a massive danger to public security. Aswat was linked via phone contacts with the bombers, had met some of them in Pakistan before the attack and had travelled back to the UK just weeks before the attacks and last the UK on the same morning that the attacks took place. He was arrested in Zambia a few weeks later with bomb-making manuals. The U.S. wanted him extradited for past terrorist offences on their territory but faced legal obstacles from European judges. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) first blocked his extradition to the USA due to concerns his paranoid schizophrenia would worsen in US prison conditions (breaching human rights against inhuman treatment). After US assurances on care, he was eventually extradited back in 2013. He was sentenced in the USA in October 2015 to 20 years for conspiring to provide material support to al-Qaeda, including helping set up a jihadist training camp in Oregon with Abu Hamza associates. After serving time, he was extradited back to the UK around 2022 and held under the Mental Health Act. Last year, UK judges decided to give him an early release and he is now free in West Yorkshire with just limited monitoring since it was deemed that stricter measures such as being forced to wear an ankle monitor risked worsening his psychiatric status and would be against mental health law provisions.

Catholics are 11 points more likely to believe in reincarnation than Protestants. And 9 points more likely to believe in ghosts. However, they are 6 points less likely to believe in miracles and 8 points less likely to believe in Hell.

While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments from God (including the clear command: “You shall have no other gods before me” and “You shall not make for yourself an idol”), the Israelites grew impatient. They demanded that Aaron, Moses’ brother, create gods they could see and worship. The people gave their gold earrings, which were melted down and fashioned into a golden calf (or young bull). They declared, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt,” and held a festival of worship, dancing, and celebration around it. This was classic idolatry, elevating a human-made object (and the leader who enabled it) above God. Moses returned, smashed the stone tablets in anger, destroyed the calf, and the incident became a lasting symbol in Jewish and Christian tradition of misplaced faith, impatience, and the danger of turning leaders or symbols into objects of worship. Critics of the Mar-a-Lago event (including several replies in the X thread itself) see the golden Trump statue as a modern echo of that same biblical episode: - A group of religious leaders (here, evangelical pastors) is publicly blessing and dedicating a literal golden statue of a political figure. - The statue is being treated with reverence; people taking photos, draping it ceremonially, and celebrating it as something “made from love.” - Trump himself responds warmly to the statue, calling it incredible and thanking the creators. - Observers argue this crosses into idolatry: elevating a human leader (and a physical golden image of him) to a near-sacred status, at a time when faith is supposed to be directed toward God alone. The visual and ceremonial similarities to the Exodus story are why the “golden calf / sapi emas” comparison has spread so quickly. The biblical precedent remains a powerful warning in Judeo-Christian tradition against exactly this kind of spectacle.
