Zane Burns was droppin' some pretty good hammers with his slider on Friday in scrimmage action. The way Burns stays closed for such a long time in his delivery it gives the hitter the perception that he's "cross-firing". But, he's not! As you can see, he's comin' straight down the hill, and he also "hides" the ball very well in terms of his delivery, too. Makes for a VERY uncomfortable at-bat for righties, especially. And, the CONFIDENCE! Dude commands the mound and has a very confident presentation, which has a certain amount of "intimidation" factor to it...Ahem...Sean Youngerman! And...He's just gettin' started! Burns is just a Freshman out of Chandler, Arizona, but don't let that fool ya. He was a Gold Medalist on the 15U National Team, and has played a lot of HIGH-level competition, so there's quite a bit more "plug and play" to him than your average Freshman, IMO. And, while he has a pretty classic "power pitcher" profile (hard slider, and change off of a good fastball), he also features a potential calling card of "pitchability". Looks like he trusts his slider to the point where he feels comfortable throwing it in any spot, and he also has a 2 Seam to pair with his 4 Seam. So, he can use backspin and RPMs to get above swings at the top of the zone, but can also move to ball to miss barrels in all the other locations. That combo gives pitchers the ability to sequence in any which way that is needed to get every type of hitter out. If you can't tell, I'm pretty pumped about both the level of "plug and play" at the moment, but even more about the upside potential as he grows. #gopokes #okstate
