@EmilyAPaschall That is a central component to the @IHeartCKH classroom social contract. It was something I just talked about last Friday. The classroom is all about relationships and authenticity.

While visiting classrooms this week, I listened in on a conversation students were having regarding an assignment which included the following discussion question: “How do I want to be treated by my teacher?” In a small group, a student shared that he wants to be a part of the conversation if he’s being discussed as a problem in the classroom. He explained that he struggled with behaviors in elementary and remembers overhearing teachers talk negatively about him in the teachers’ lounge. “I wanted to be good. I wanted to do better. I just needed someone to care and teach me how.” Wow. 1. Kudos to the high school teacher for seeing the value in these conversations at the beginning of the year. 2. Kids are capable of so much more than we give them credit for. Sometimes all it takes is including them in the conversation so we can work toward the solution… TOGETHER. How will you be remembered by THAT KID? What we say and how we respond matters. It starts with giving them a voice.
