@buryingground enters its 275th winter. Thanks to volunteers who turned up today to install the winter covers to protect the most fragile stones. We beat the snow by minutes.

Elizabeth Deborah (Forster) Ussher was wife of Rear Admiral Sir Thomas "Undaunted" Ussher. His distinguished career included conveying Napoleon to exile on Elba. She died while he was here as supervisor of the RN Yard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Us… St. Paul's & @BuryingGround

#31DaysOfGraves Day 34: Masonic The newest monument in @BuryingGround is for the earliest Nova Scotia resident in the place. Erasmus Philipps arrived in the province in 1721. He founded the 1st Masonic lodge in Canada. This monument was erected in the 20th century.

The Lieutenant Governor is the Old Burying Grounds’ closest neighbour. We wish to thank the outgoing LG, the Honourable Arthur J LeBlanc for serving as the OBG’s patron. We look forward to continuing this relationship w/ Mike Savage.

Provincial Secretary Richard Bulkeley was one of Halifax's most important civil servants. He arrived w/ Cornwallis & served under 13 Governors or Lieutenant Governors. He is probably buried @BuryingGround near his wife, or under St Paul's. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_B…

It seems the carver made a #Gravemistake, turning "John J Partis" into "John J Prtis". I can't find reference to any "Prtis" but there are genealogy records for a "Partis" who died in Halifax "sometime before 1826," which aligns with this stone's 1824 date. @BuryingGround

A TikTok featuring a creator cleaning a grave with household cleaning products (& withOUT consent) has garnered millions of views in less than a week. While it’s wonderful to want to care & preserve these spaces, consent & conservation is critical. @Graveyard_arch

Mary Ann (Hines) married Thomas Laidlaw May 1 1820. She died Feb 25 1823 At age 25. @BuryingGround

Susan Mary Brown died in 1841 at age 37. Her gravestone also records 4 children who died before their third birthdays. Mortality rates for young children in British North America were as high as 50% in the 19th Century opentextbc.ca/preconfederati…. @BuryingGround

#OTD in 1814, troops led by Major General Robert Ross entered Washington DC, stormed the Capitol and burned The White House. Ross is buried in Halifax’s @BuryingGround

This is a different sort of commemoration. It's unusual to see widows with the financial stability to commission a stone for their husbands. I want to know more about Sarah Jane!
