In 1814 #OTD , Major-General Robert Ross, the man who burned the White House & inadvertently helped inspire the US national anthem, was fatally wounded and died in Baltimore. He is buried in Halifax's Old Burying Ground. 1/9

This 1828 gravestone for Royal Navy Lieut Thomas Hughes caught my eye because his wife Sarah Jane (Major), who paid for the stone gets top billing and larger type. You see this often with husbands who survived their wives. Not so much the other way around. @BuryingGround
