I hate it… but with Aranda being ruled out of the starting lineup, it moves the needle for me and I have to play it
The Rays are bottom-10 vs lefties, but without Aranda (4th best on the team vs lefties), they’re even worse. They have 6 hitters in the lineup that are BAD vs lefties — Tolle just needs to pitch around Yandy/Caminero/Vilade and he’ll be in line for a strong outing. Tolle is expected to see some negative regression over his next few starts, but I don’t expect that to come here given the plus matchup
On the flip side, we have a strong fade angle against Nick Martinez, who has DREADFUL advanced numbers. His numbers are as follows:
2.29 ERA
4.52 xERA
4.44 xFIP
4.64 SIERA
A >1.0 difference projects sizable regression. A >2.0 difference is MASSIVE.
Boston is tied for worst vs RHP on the year, but they have been hitting well over the last few weeks and again (well above league average)… Martinez is in line for MASSIVE regression... and I’d lean towards it continuing tonight (he allowed 6 runs in 4IP last start)
Bullpen-wise, Boston has a sizable edge as well. The Rays have a bottom 6-10 bullpen while using 6 arms last night (they’ll be without two of their set-up men tonight). Boston has a top 5-10 unit depending on metrics and has all of their key arms available.
It’s ugly… but at a near coin flip, I’ll bite
