Day 289

At some point I was privileged to lead a large team of fresh finance staff; bright Zambians, most in their early 20s. It didn’t take long to see the difference as in where they had schooled shaped how they thought, spoke and just how they showed up. Those who had gone through top private schools likes of Chengelo, ISL walked in already wired for global business. Their writing was sharp. They questioned everything; models, assumptions even senior staff. I swear some came across as rude… but they weren’t. It’s just that critical thinking had been drilled into them from an early age. They were trained to ask tough challenging questions. For them, connections start early. Some had LinkedIn profiles at 18 that would impress CEOs. Internships, overseas exchanges, multinational exposure… name it! One ka boy had even interned at a collateral management firm in Johannesburg before he turned 20 🙆‍♂️ Those from government schools had just as much potential. But you could tell it had been buried under rote learning, oversized classes, recycled textbooks. Their stories were common and relatable…“We had a Math teacher who barely showed up… and we only had one textbook.” The difference was visible. If you can afford it, take your kids to a good private school. Not because government schools are worthless, but because very few are built to turn raw intelligence into real opportunity at global stage. The gap starts early and it only widens with time. Free education has opened the gates, yes but no one talks enough about what’s happening inside those schools; overcrowded classrooms, underpaid teachers and in some instances, outdated methods. We still have a long way to go, to be honest.

They say salary alone isn’t enough and that you need a side hustle to be comfortable, but what they don’t tell you is that the side hustle will sometimes borrow a portion of the salary 😄.

The new me is aware of problems but committed to progress.

Sticking to constant progress and not instant perfection.

My kids are unlocking a whole new level of patience and tolerance I seriously never knew I had. 💆🏾‍♀️😅
