@QiaochuYuan Do you mean the last part (lay people don’t understand) or the first part (nobody understands)?

nobody knows what electricity is anyway (myself included). mfs will get all wacked out about quantum mechanics meanwhile straight up regular old electromagnetism is already incredibly mysterious and no layman understands it and it’s responsible for every interesting thing
Ben Landau-Taylor@benlandautaylor

Funny how innumerate Gaia worshippers are worried about AI using all the water while technocapitalist singularitarians are worried about AI using all the electricity. Like the Gaians had a perfectly coherent resource constraint RIGHT THERE but they went with the fake one anyway.

@modernmoderate3 @OriginMaterials The vast majority of my net worth is already in ORGN, and I’ve paid more in taxes on ORGN stock exercises than I have in my 401k. Your definition of an entrepreneur leaning in seems to be “be rich already so that you can plow more cash in whenever you want”.

@OriginMaterials For years, every time you speak @bysl it's an optimistic tour de force. Yet nobody within the company buys a share of stock and then nothing pitched plays out. Truly a fatal attraction following this story from inception through today.

Interesting call from $ORGN - hinting at big brand names testing their caps -high revenue going into 2026 -looking at offering others products such as plastic container lids. - they think stock price is undervalued so looking for loans to fund.

It's common to blame modern architects for the rise of the glass-box aesthetic of modern buildings. But to me, the question isn't why architects embraced this style, its why real estate developers did. This week on Construction Physics I look at why. construction-physics.com/p/why-skyscrap…

@jasoncrawford @curiouswavefn This is basically the message Andromeda Strain tried to convert, and I can’t think of a notable time that that hasn’t been right.

@jasoncrawford @curiouswavefn It always sounds scary on paper because you’re reducing the full complexity of fitness to just a few dimensions, but the reality of the environment dominates the new capabilities for selection of the organism.

A new article in Science voices concern about a line of biological research which, if successful long-term, could create a grave threat to humanity and to most life on Earth. Fortunately, the threat is distant, and avoidable—but only if we have common knowledge of it.

@jasoncrawford I don’t think the last claim here is true. The recognition mechanisms of the immune system are able to adapt to different enantiomers.

A group of scientists has recently been more closely investigating the risk, and they now believe that mirror bacteria could replicate in our bloodstream, using achiral nutrients. Worse, they would be largely invisible to the immune system.

If your opponents are opportunists, one way to beat them is to outlast them. Opportunists almost by definition lack staying power.

@EliotJacobson We’re gonna make it. There’s too much adaptability, variety, and grit in humans to be beat by a few generations that made a few bad decisions. Could it have been easier? Sure. But we’re still gmi.

In the morning, I scour the news for the daily moment of doom and data-driven posts. In the evening, after a drink (or two), all that is left is sadness, anxiety and (repeating myself) sadness. Tomorrow, promise, I will be of service and be generous. Kindness? I'll try. F&%k.

@TPolymerist I think HDPE is a Corolla or a Camry. (I know I’ve wandered into a different mapping than polymer = brand!)

@TPolymerist PET is definitely an FJ60 Land Cruiser. Rugged, can be used for tons of applications, and you can rebuild it over and over again!
