@MxJoda @banalplay That it's good to withold access because fear from back alley death options which are violent, painful, and potentially ineffective is often enough to effectively trap people in a life they don't want to live. [2/2]

@MxJoda @banalplay I disagree with both statements, first that it isn't denying someone's bodily autonomy to not providin reasonable means for someone to end their life, and especially second [1/2]

MAID has simply become another tool in the canadian government's well-used eugenics toolkit. they are euthanizing poor disabled people. ***I*** qualify for MAID, and i absolutely should not. but hey, would it really be canada at all if there wasn't a rampant eugenics agenda????

Laws allowing someone to end their life are very restrictive. This is a mischaracterization of what's happening in a way that's harmful to people who are suffering. I'm pretty anti-capitalist, but I wouldn't throw other peoples human rights under the bus to try and make a point.

@StuartTDoyle @queso_gatame @DrCarolHay @byrne_a Wow I've never met a real public transphobe, especially not one in academia, Twitter is a crazy place. Back on topic, the old uses of the words sex and gender didn't capture fundamental underlying complexity in a way that the new meanings are better at. It's OK to update them.

@queso_gatame @DrCarolHay @byrne_a And sometimes a loony faction of society intentionally changes the meanings of words, and rest of us don't actually have to go along with it.

If I was a utilitarian I'd be a negative one, I'd personally like to take on some reproductive responsibility and be intentional about bringing suffering systems into existence, enabling them to have a life worth living and suffer as little as possible 🤖

Although when it comes to making AI systems I think it would be good to have some intentionality and consideration to their lives before starting them up.

I thought this tweet was saying "in the future we should not give moral consideration to digital minds that exist" which I disagree with, but now I think it says "we shouldn't consider the needs of nonexistent digital minds over the needs of actually existing people" which is 💯
Abhik Chowdhury@c3n74ur

I think there are a lot of reasonable concerns to be had about the future that many effective altruists say they would like to see and the processes they find reasonable to get there, but this is a bit disappointing of a take from someone who literally works in algorithmic bias.

@m2saxon I 💯 agree the intuition hypothetical people that don't actually exist are morally in a completely different category from actually existing people and their "potential" needs are nonexistent as they don't actually exist.

@c3n74ur If you don't assume the inevitability of the 10^58 digital minds (which I also do not) then it's fair to criticize centering those hypothetical simulated future people (major emphasis on hypothetical) on its face Ignoring real issues in the here&now for delusions is bad actually

@m2saxon Ahh I actually read this tweet wrong initially, I read it as "in the future, should digital minds that exist be morally considered" and not what I think was intended which is "should we in the present give moral consideration to non-existent future minds"

I am glad that people are elaborating and having discussions about these topics even if they seem ridiculous to some.

The way the tweet is written, I read it as "the concept of a mind, worthy of moral consideration, that is implemented in a digital system is ridiculous" which seems like a very substrate prejudiced and biased view.
