14/x Use firewood sourced from your local area. Don't take your local firewood with you when you go camping -- get firewood there. Don't bring your leftover firewood back home with you when you're done camping -- leave it behind. Don't move firewood.

If you haven't heard already, the emerald ash borer has now been found in British Columbia. This is a big deal. 🧵

I am looking for any evaluation of the % of invasive species present but undetected on a national or regional level. Bonus points if it's plants in a temperate area. Please RT.

Last month, @simonelimhing and I had the great pleasure of working with @c4tier and Dr. Janice Cooke at the University of Alberta. We chipped in a small piece to our hosts' great body of work dedicated to protecting lodgepole pine.

Prairie strips are a farm conservation practice that requires minimal intervention and delivers huge benefits By converting 10% of cropland to native prairie, farmers can reduce soil loss by 95%, total phosphorous loss by 90%, and total nitrogen loss by 85% A quick summary:

@rhi_peery @jrossibarra We have to hammer first, especially for xylem. We flash freeze in liquid N2, hammer, and then mortar and pestle or mixer mill depending on how much there is

Anyone have good recommendations for grinding really tough plant tissue like wood (teosinte fruitcases in our case) to get fine enough powder for DNA extraction? N2 + mortar/pestle, genogrinder, etc. haven't done the trick for us.

This week I came across what I assume is the first #yegheritage inventory prepared by the City of Edmonton, in August 1982. It identified 37 heritage buildings in #yegdt for retention. What's happened to them in the 41 years since?
