Let us reflect, sincerely and without sentiment. In the past few days, the President has reportedly approved ₦3.3 trillion as a “full and final” payment for debts in the power sector. Yet, this is not the first time such approvals have been made. On May 17, 2024, ₦3.3 trillion was approved for the same purpose. On July 25, 2024, another ₦4 trillion bond was approved to settle similar debts. There have also been other approvals in between, all targeted at addressing the same power sector liabilities. This raises a fundamental question: were the previous approvals mere announcements without execution? ₦3.3 Trillion Again? Nigeria’s Power Crisis Without End During the 2023 campaign, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a clear promise: that if he failed to deliver stable electricity, Nigerians should not re-elect him. Today, the reality is that power supply has worsened, to the extent that there are even discussions about disconnecting the Presidential Villa from the national grid. Each time legitimate concerns are raised, what we see appears more like policy pronouncements than measurable progress. Now, again, we are confronted with another ₦3.3 trillion approval to settle power sector debts. These debts were largely accumulated under successive administrations of the All Progressives Congress between 2015 and 2025. This raises serious concerns about accountability, transparency, and effectiveness in public financial management. It is important to note that government institutions and agencies, including the Presidential Villa owe a significant portion of these debts. Year after year, budgets were made and funds appropriated. Why then were these obligations not settled when due? And from what source will this new payment be made? Are we resorting once more to borrowing to service inefficiencies? Key questions remain unanswered: How did the debt accrue? What is the actual total debt in the power sector? Which components of the debts are due to operators’ inefficiency and should be borne by them? Why have previous approvals not translated into tangible improvements? Who are the real beneficiaries of these repeated payments? Is the ₦3.3 trillion approved on April 6, 2026, the same as the ₦3.3 trillion approved in May 2024, and how does it relate to the ₦4 trillion bond approved in July 2024? Nigeria must move beyond recycled announcements and confront the power sector crisis with sincerity, transparency, and decisive reforms. Until we do so, we will remain trapped in a cycle of debt and darkness. But with discipline, accountability, and the right leadership, a new Nigeria is still possible. -PO

I’ve meant to post this for the past couple of weeks. When I came to Lagos last year, I struggled to find a church, not because there were many, but because I was looking for where the Spirit was supplied. The two churches I am connected to do not hold Sunday services. But eventually, I found Burning Hearts Ministries. At the first service I attended, I realized they pray in tongues for one hour before every proper service. That was it for me. Once a church prioritizes long prayers, my heart is set there. But I didn’t know I was just scratching the surface. For the first time in over a decade, I have found a church and a pastor through whom Who supplies the Spirit supplies it to me every Sunday. I want you to know my story. For a long time in my Christian life, I have always expended myself for others. Since NYSC, I was in my mum’s church. I was co-pastoring it. I kept my fire by immersing myself in the sermons of my fathers in the Lord. But no one was ministering to me. It was a burden I bore gladly. But now, Pastor Elvis @ElvisOkhifo does, every Sunday. I am saying this publicly because I, more than anyone, know what it means to successfully minister Christ. It is a lot. It means that death is at work in him so that the life of Christ can flow to us as members. I think two Sundays ago, my spiritual life wasn’t the best that week. But I knew that if I got to church, I would receive refreshing and refilling. Guess what? I did. My lamp was flickering when I got to church, but it was blazing hot when I left. I am saying that Pastor Elvis labors like no other in the Word. And I believe I can say that because I know a little bit of the Word myself. Pastor Elvis labors so much. So much. Apart from spending hours preparing his sermon notes, he asks his wife to read them aloud to him on the way to church just for final checks. Then comes the Spirit through which he preaches the sermon. I am always and consistently refreshed, and I am growing. Should I talk about the integrity and godly sincerity of his life? That’s for another day. As Paul said, “our boast is this: the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God” (2 Corinthians 1:12). I am saying all these for two reasons. One, because I am grateful to God for situating me in a local church in which His name and presence are. Two, because the Bible says, “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching” (1 Timothy 5:17). I honor you, Pastor Elvis. You dey try for me, for us. God bless Burning Hearts Ministries.

BREAKING ADC is taking its fight for democracy global. As part of our efforts to strengthen international engagement, we are establishing a Special Representatives Network across key global capitals to engage foreign governments, amplify credible information about Nigeria’s political environment, and counter one-sided government narratives. This comes amid growing attacks on our members, attempts to undermine our leadership, and efforts to restrict political participation ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Our representatives will engage foreign governments, international media, democracy institutions, and the Nigerian diaspora, providing regular briefings on political developments, human rights concerns, and electoral integrity. We are also launching a National Documentation Initiative to systematically track and report incidents affecting political participation across Nigeria. From Washington DC to London, Brussels to Addis Ababa, ADC is building a global platform for accountability. Nigeria’s democracy must be seen, heard, and defended everywhere.

On this Good Friday, I join Christian faithful across Nigeria and beyond in solemn reflection on the ultimate sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. His selfless love, humility, and unwavering obedience to the will of God remain timeless virtues that inspire us all. As we commemorate His passion and death, let us be reminded of the boundless grace that flows from His sacrifice, a grace that calls us to live with compassion, forgiveness, and unity. May this sacred day renew our faith, strengthen our bonds as one people, and guide us towards a future built on love and peace. I wish all Christians a blessed Good Friday.
