I understand the general idea, but saying that “such and such wrote all the hooks” is overly simplistic. It does seem to like Michael Jackson didn’t play many instruments proficiently, per se, like Stevie Wonder, although hearing demos, it seems that M.J. sometimes had musical ideas he vocalized, then had the likes of Q and very capable studio musicians interpret those ideas, sure, one of them being Lukather on other tracks), but also Greg Phillinganes, Louis Johnson, Michael Boddicker, etc. For this song, Jackson elsewhere made it known that he was directly “inspired” by “I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)” which he had in his mind and then others played what he sang to them.
