The Public Hearing portion of Council’s March 23, 2026 Public Hearing Meeting on the Repeal of Blanket Rezoning (Land Use Bylaw 1P2007 Amendments Implementing Citywide Residential Rezoning) LOC2026-0010, C2026-0153 (Proposed Bylaw 9P2026) has now concluded. Public submissions are no longer being accepted for distribution to Council and no additional public speakers will be called. A total of 554 members of the public registered to speak during the Public Hearing, and 411 public speakers addressed Council during the Public Hearing. There were a total of 3,293 written submissions received and distributed. The meeting video and written submissions can be viewed at calgary.ca/ph. The March 23, 2026 Public Hearing Meeting of Council will continue on Wednesday, April 8 at 9:30 a.m. Watch live at calgary.ca/watchlive, or attend in person in Council Chamber (Municipal Building, 800 Macleod Tr. Danielle Smith and the UCP continue to attack the very existence of 2SLGBTQIA+ people. The latest proposed changes to the Education Act - limiting schools from displaying affirming symbols like the Pride flag, removing welcoming and inclusive language - are not only misguided and harmful polivy decisions, they are deliberate actions that signal to young people that they are not seen, not valued, and not welcome. We cannot afford to be silent nor complacent. This is yet another example of a government showing clear intolerance toward equity-deserving Albertans. But what is most egregious is who is being targeted, children. When a young person does not feel safe, does not feel accepted, or does not feel that they belong, the consequences are profound. These decisions shape not only their childhood, but their future, impacting mental health, self-worth, and long-term well-being. We just marked Transgender Day of Visibility, and the silence from many was noticeable. The silence when rights were rolled back was noticeable. And if we remain silent now, we are complicit. We are telling this government that what they are doing is acceptable. This goes beyond any one community. It speaks to who we are as a province and what we are willing to tolerate. Policies rooted in exclusion do not just harm individuals, they damage the social and economic fabric of Alberta. They send a message to investors, to talent, to families - that Alberta is not a place where everyone is safe, valued, and able to thrive. Albertans deserve better. We deserve a government that does not make decisions that damage our reputation, drive people away, and make others think twice about building a future in Alberta. We should be moving forward, not backwards.
