“As an artist that is African American I often visit museums and galleries when I travel and one thing I’ve noticed is that when you see paintings of Kings, Queens & religious figures, none of them look like me. As an artist whose works are constantly being added to the permanent collections of museums across the nation I feel it’s my job to be a part of what changes that for future visitors to see. Representation is important. In my paintings, similar to this one, you will often see strong, confident black men and boys donning durags on their heads. These durags represent crowns. I didn’t want to paint us in traditional golden crowns with precious stones because the majority of us don’t relate to those so this is how I honor us, with durags. Being depressed, anxious, sad, in love or even overly happy are not traits often accepted or expected when talking about men in many circles and homes across America. The truth is, we can experience all of those things at any given moment. A lot of us try to portray this image of being hard on the outside similar to the crate in this painting just to hide or protect what is really going on inside of us.
