Most people believe Christianity was a gift brought to Africa by European missionaries in the 1800s. But if you travel back to the 4th century, you will find a reality that resets your entire brain. While the Roman Empire was still arguing over whether they should even stop killing Christians, a young African King named Ezana was sitting on the throne of the Axumite Empire in modern day Ethiopia. Axum was not some small village. It was one of the four greatest powers in the world, sitting right alongside Rome and Persia. In 330 AD, nearly 1,500 years before the Scramble for Africa, King Ezana made a move that changed history. He declared Christianity the official state religion of his empire. Read that again slowly. He did not do it because a white man told him to. In fact, most of Europe at the time was still deep in paganism, worshipping lightning and trees. King Ezana was minting gold coins with the Cross of Christ on them while the ancestors of the people who "supposedly" brought us the Bible had not even learned how to read it yet. This was not a religion of submission. It was a religion of sovereignty. The Ethiopian church remained so independent and so rooted in African soil that they are the only people on earth who still have the Garima Gospels. These are the oldest illustrated Bibles in existence, preserved in the mountains for over a millennium. When someone tells you that the faith is a white man’s tool designed to make Africans submissive, they are skipping 1,700 years of history. We did not receive the faith from the West. We held onto it while the West was still trying to find its way. Africa did not just join the story. We were the custodians of the story while the rest of the world was in the dark. History too sweet jare. INALEGWU.

The White man wrote the Bible to make us submit to him. Christianity is a social construct — Pastor Tobi Adegboyega Controversial UK-based Nigerian pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, is once again at the centre of heated debate after a viral clip captured him making bold claims about Christianity and Africa’s colonial past. In the trending video, the founder of the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPAC Nation) alleged that religion was w@aponised against Africans during colonisation. “The white man came to Africa when he came to colonize us. He told us he was selling to us a bigger religion,” he said. He further claimed that certain Bible passages were deliberately inserted to enforce submission. “In his bible, he’s gone to insert things like ‘sl+ves obey your masters.’ He put it in his bible. He used God to trick us. He tricked us into submission. He tricked our leaders into submission so that he can use us build his own country.” The pastor argued that after benefiting from religion, Western nations have now distanced themselves from it. “Now, Africans are the ones embracing religion and he’s left it because he’s finished using it,” he stated. Adegboyega also suggested that a new generation of Africans is beginning to question long-held religious narratives. “There’s a new set of Africans coming up who asks questions,” he added. In one of the most striking parts of his speech, he said, “They put our parents in a ship called Jesus and they shipped them in chains and fetters to other countries.” He concluded with another controversial take: “Christianity is a social construct; it tells us how to marry even though there’s no how to marry in the bible.”
