ICE raided fifteen Zipps restaurants in the Phoenix valley today, abducting workers who contribute to our community every day. I went to the closest Zipps in Tempe to peacefully observe and join in nonviolent protest. Without warning, as we chanted “ICE out of Tempe!,” a masked federal agent fired pepper balls at the ground where one young man sat down in front of a van and at my feet as I stood by him and backed away, saying “This is a peaceful protest.” Similar abuses happened in multiple other locations. One immigrant worker was taken to the hospital from the Tempe Zipps as well as multiple protestors who were pepper sprayed at another location. This cannot continue. We the people must stand together in disciplined nonviolent resistance, exercising our 1st Amendment rights to protect all of our rights. And every government leader who believes in democracy and rejects authoritarian rule must demand that ICE leave our communities and refuse to cooperate with or fund this lawless Department of Homeland Security.
