Moving the shop around to accommodate the big manual mill, I have this situation with the welding kit. I don’t know how to weld, but did some side work for a company that makes TIG welding equipment and they handed me a very nice TIG rig. Need to package it all into a nice console/welding table to save space… but am clueless about TIG welding… but need to weld the organization for all the welding stuff. A conundrum!

Filets like this are impossible to machine without a 5 axis and radius specific tooling. Also knowing how to do some edge breaking on your own would go far.

Just round the edges I don’t care what it looks like. For instant quote sites where you just upload a step or stl does this effect the cam software in some awful way? The world‘s getting a lot better with just uploading an STL and getting a quote right away. How do I show no sharp edges if my only option is uploading an STL?

ok I'm committing cardinal sins in CAD. for the instant quote guys is there an options for "break all edges". Or do I have to keep firing the fillet weapon everywhere @davidliuxyz @KennethCassel @jimbelosic

@gak_pdx @JulianFried I’m very interested in brother but was last quote was a bit out of our budget. Would you be able to provide more specifics on the machine? That would definitely be within our price range.

@cameron_schatz @JulianFried Not a typo. Out on the U500 100T right now, coming to everything else this month. More coming by IMTS... Brother has some insane stuff in the works (I am biased, I work there)

@gak_pdx @JulianFried Just finish not surface accuracy. Budget is the limiting factor but trying to optimize for smaller drone parts is key. Parts will be anodized after as well.

@cameron_schatz @JulianFried That world is so hyper-exotic because you’re in the optical mold/lab nerd ballgame. Do you care about absolute surface accuracy, or just finish? Finish is relatively straightforward, hyper finish with micron profile accuracy is why a Kern costs what it does.

@cameron_schatz @JulianFried 1-3mm end mills, in aluminum, with the best quality surface finish… haha, how much do you want to spend? Think- Kern, Roku Roku, Fehlman, Sodik money.

@gak_pdx @JulianFried If you have any spare time I would love to pick your brain about 5 axis machine specs for milling aluminum with 1-3 mm endmills for the best quality surface finish. Specifically spindle speeds and any other advice you would have.

@cameron_schatz @JulianFried I know a couple of folks who *swear* by it, but they also came from really poor quality products.

@gak_pdx @JulianFried I’ve been duped. Always heard very good things about them but never any first hand experience.

@cameron_schatz @JulianFried Pain in the ass. Requires RO water. Eats lots of paint off of machines. No performance enhancement that makes any of the bother/cost worth it.
