🌿 Wrapping up the second part of today’s CAP Network Ireland 2023-2027 LEADER Capacity Building Workshop, the discussion focused on the intersecting opportunities of the LEADER Programme and Agricultural Diversification.
Susan Bookle from @KildareCoCo and James O’Dwyer, Kildare Agri Tourism Glamping and Cycling Project, gave an overview of this innovative example of farm diversification in practice. LEADER supported the construction of 3 chalets, which began welcoming guests last year.
Bernard Doorley, @teagasc, looked at a wide range of topics on farm diversification and rural tourism, introducing Teagasc information booklets, Teagasc research centres and innovation hubs, and discussing the psychological and social factors that build leadership for innovation and progress.
Mary Stack, @NEWKDNews, presented engaging video footage from the Bainne Blasta project, which used LEADER funding to support an on-farm fresh milk vending machine business.
Alistair Prior, @eucapnetwork, delved into farm diversification research data from across European Member States, identifying challenges to the implementation of new diversification measures, including market access, labour shortages, financial risk, etc. Interestingly, the data from across Europe shows that farm diversification is being spearheaded primarily by young women. A recent EU CAP Network Thematic Group identified novel ideas for addressing the challenges and barriers to successful diversified agri-business development.
🤝 Thanks to all our speakers and attendees for an interesting day of ideation, sharing, and chat!
