☘️ Supporting the Traditions that Shape Ireland’s Countryside.
Traditional Irish farm buildings characterise the Irish landscape and serve as repositories of traditional building and craft skills, reminding us of the historical legacy of rural smallholdings.
This highly valued Mayo ‘granary’, dating to the second half of the 19th century, was restored under ACRES supported by the Traditional Farm Building Grant Scheme. Works included repairs to the roof, stonework, and external joinery, as well as renewal of the loft floor and reinstatement of the external stone steps. While it is likely that it was once a single-storey cottage, the building now serves as a donkey shelter and hay store.
The Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has supported over 1,000 traditional farm building restoration projects, recognising their cultural value and ensuring their conservation for agricultural use into the future.
