Asia’s Four Dragons: Singapore 🇸🇬 Hong Kong 🇭🇰 Taiwan 🇹🇼 South Korea 🇰🇷 Stock market rankings: Singapore 🇸🇬 - 22nd ($718.4B) Hong Kong 🇭🇰 - 18th ($1.23T) Taiwan 🇹🇼 - 5th ($4T) South Korea 🇰🇷 - 7th (3.9T) Singapore’s weakness in its stock market size is obvious on first glance amongst the Four Dragons but I’d say it’s pretty impressive considering a population size of 6 million Higher. Much higher.

@AirEVthingTRNSP And they still managed to land safely at the original destination? In that case they massively overloaded fuel which is a waste too, since every ton on departure costs you ridiculously more fuel to just get lift. Overall this doesn't make sense.

@SSSSStephan @DRTnky Not bashing, just preference. Changi is an amazing airport, no doubt! :) But I prefer to have centralized security checkpoints so I can maximise lounge time. The check at the gate is quite stressful to me.

I’ll never get tired of talking about the best airport in the world Took me FIVE minutes to check my baggage, and to get to the boarding gate this morning Also, where else would you find Rolex, Hermes, Gucci, and other luxurious brands in the Departure Hall? Singapore built different

@LeonWaidmann Easy to grow fast when your base is small IF you use percentages instead of absolute numbers. Amateur statistical analysis there :)

Vietnam has the lowest foreign population in Asia. By far. 🇻🇳 🔹 Singapore: ~38% 🔹 Malaysia: ~10% 🔹 Thailand: ~5-7% 🔹 Philippines: ~1-2% 🔹 Cambodia: ~1% 🔹 Indonesia: <1% 🔹 Vietnam: 0.1-0.2% That's 100-200k foreigners in a country of 100M+. Roughly 1 in 1,000 people. Meanwhile, Vietnam is growing 5-7% GDP per year. For a decade. The biggest upside always comes before the crowd arrives. Vietnam is still early. Most people just don't see it yet.

“Singapore has no startups because it’s too small” Estonia 1.3M ppl. Skype, Wise, Bolt. 30% of locals don’t even speak Estonian properly. Singapore’s best startup? Started by a guy who dared and forced to take risk His startup angel round was British, Seed round Malaysia skipped, Series A by the Americans, Series B by Japan, now IPOing with China money. His name was Lee.
Arthur@arthur0x

Singapore will never be a great startup hub because it simply doesn't have a large homogeneous market for successful startups to scale big locally before they can branch out oversea. All successful startups need to global by day 1 but what edge do you have compare to the local founders competing in US or China market? Southeast Asia market size is also too small to matter. The latest blog from @eladgil is very illuminating. Majority of unicorns are in the US: The US added almost $1.2T of unicorn market cap in the past year and now has a ~65% share of global market cap. Europe has surpassed China in terms of global market cap share, but is still at just ~10%. blog.eladgil.com/p/unicorn-mark…

@CleansedTweets Illegal money transfers yield to this. Crypto is not an acceptable currency since it's not regulated. Crypto exchange transactions lead to this as they should.

HSBC UK De-banked me - a 19 yrs customer 🥹 I was notified by #HSBC that they were closing my accounts two months ago with no warning. I was given no reason why but was told I could appeal. It was horrendous. The process? They farmed details. They sent me a safeguarding form asking for exhaustive details about my finances, job history, employers, basically everything except my DNA. I was required to book an appointment with their safeguarding team. Getting an appointment was extremely difficult. It seems HSBC is de-banking many customers, as slots were booked for weeks. I was finally given one three weeks later. They call me. At the time, I was in China. They called my UK pay-as-you-go phone. We spoke for 15 minutes before the call suddenly cut off. I booked another appointment. Again, I was in China. With the account closure deadline approaching, they called again. 20 minutes in, the call dropped once more. Why? UK phone credit. I have to pay for the incoming call too. That call alone cost me almost £50 in pay-as-you-go credit. I had to book a third appointment and repeat the entire interview, providing my international tax ID, foreign address, source of funds, investments, and every other detail. I was farmed for details. After all that, the rep told me my case would be “reviewed”… and then my accounts were closed anyway. No reason given. Why close? There is no legal reason in my opinion.

A little-known fact about Hong Kong: Britain 🇬🇧didn’t legally have to hand over Hong Kong Island & Kowloon in 1997. Only the New Territories. The island was ceded to Britain in perpetuity after the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. Kowloon was also permanent. Only the New Territories were on a 99-year lease expiring in 1997. But the New Territories had become completely integrated, water supply, industry, population, infrastructure. Separating them would’ve left the rest unsustainable. China refused any split and demanded the whole territory back. So Britain negotiated the full handover under “one country, two systems.”

@_mm85 Most definitely the human! Drone delivery makes only sense on longer distances. Also the drone doesn't pickup itself so the restaurant staff will unnecessarily delay it. Drone delivery in Shenzhen is stupid. Long distance... maybe worthwhile

Tell me your guess in the comments! Today I ran a test: I ordered dinner from the same restaurant to the exact same address. Order 1: ordered first and delivered by drone to the drone pad in Shenzhen. Order 2: ordered 5 minutes after and delivered by a human on a scooter (business as usual) to the same spot. Which one do you think arrived first? (I know not the same dishes but I literally had to split my order in 2 because of drone capacity!)

@TGTM_Official Pretty harmless. He's just pushing for a boat trip. She's being too easily annoyed, he walked away pretty fast. I reckon she has never been in Bali or Thailand somewhere, would be exactly the same. Different country, different norms - if you travel you have to accept that.

A Taiwanese tourist who loves to travel solo was on a tourist trip in Egypt The girl went to the city of Luxor and there she was subjected to harassment. Then she started documenting with her phone. There are people who were trying to talk to her and posting posts that achieved millions of views, advising Taiwanese people not to travel alone. Any Egyptian here understand what is going on or she is being too arrogant?

🇨🇳🇮🇷 China's Defense Minister just told the U.S. Navy directly: our ships are going through the Strait, we have agreements with Iran and you don't touch them. The U.S. blockade is live with 15 warships in position and China just announced it's sailing through anyway. The next ship that tests that line is a geopolitical event. @MOSSADil

Yeah welcome to the financial centre of the East 😂 Taxi: No Credit Card, no Apple Pay. No Mainland Alipay. 1st ATM I found: Doesn’t take Visa Card for cash withdrawal. Finally Citi ATM gave cash to pay back hotel staff which paid the taxi. 100 HKD. 15 HKD withdrawal fee. A city full of banks and financial services- but no digital payments infrastructure. $HSI hopeless?!

@_mm85 Report the taxi, this is illegal since April 1st. They must have one digital QR code payment and one card payment at least. Also every ATM takes credit cards, not sure what you are talking about there?
