A cartoon about my father from the 1960s. At the time he was assassinated, a poll reflected that he was one of the most hated men in the United States. Today, his message has been distorted by many who would have hated him then, but evoke him now to deter justice and truth. #MLKDay #MLK #TheKingCenter #HistoryMatters #ReThinkKing

Important change for young people - access to representation, services, & supports! Sheriff Bonner decided transport wasn’t important for children to access resources at the court, even tried to get legislation to force the court into complying w/ his lack of care for children.
Mayor Lee Harris@MayorLeeHarris

With the transfer of operations to our administration, transportation to and from @ShelbyJuvenile for youth housed at YJEC resumed this week. Reinstatement of this service ensures youth get to their hearings on time, respecting their legal right to due process.

He led misguided cutting of county budget services and cutting of the tax rate to a level that left over $100M in annual revenue on the table that could have invested in infrastructure, people, and communities. So, MemphisFirst as long as you don’t actually invest in Memphis?

But for schools where children are sitting in buildings with decades of deferred maintenance, they’ll put every obstacle they can think of in the way of providing funds to address immediate needs. We’ll see how they do with a simple capital request for safety measures.

@mickwright It’s a shame to be so ill-informed and not paying attention about the challenges she created at the district. Commissioner Wright probably knows it and is just stirring the pot for some political reasons or to distract from the Commission’s own issues. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Lord willing, the school board has 455 days left in office. Will the courts resolve this before then?

@mickwright Mick, Is there any chance she gets the job back, if she wants it?

So, it’s fine to point out the emergency in public education that we need to address…but when you’re an elected official on a body and not pushing to address issues that sustain the education challenges…and you’re not taking any accountability for that…we should all question.

The housing crisis in the county is constantly overlooked & unfunded…high rate of affordable housing needs, evictions, student/family transience, workforce needs…why do you think the truancy rate is high - cause families are struggling and the county isn’t providing support.

The county doesn’t invest significantly in people or communities whose children go to the schools, doesn’t provide funding for drastic deferred maintenance…and then blames the district…he’s got to be counting on ppl not understanding how these are connected.

It seems like one.

@MayorLeeHarris That we could agree...we don't need to raise above $3.39 - at that level, like your admin said, we'd be at $205M per year more...that would be great, but even $3.00 we'd still be at $84M and have resources to make needed investments!

Look, the Commission can hold at the current rate of $3.39, raise it, reduce it, whatever. I've said reduce to $2.73, but they don't have to. They could even go higher than $3.39 (if they have the votes!). You'd at least be against raising above $3.39, right?
Cardell Orrin@cardelljo

This is part of the problem of addressing our challenges for the city and county, that we don't raise and use additional revenue. The last thing we should be doing is reducing the tax rate too low that we can't invest in the things we need - housing, transit, education, youth...

From my perspective, why would they when some of the commissioners are former Memphis School Board Members? The board member strategic fund didn’t just start. If I’m correct, it was brought through resolution by a sitting commissioner while he/she was on the school board. Both funds should be heavily scrutinized.

MSCS conducted a survey as part of their budget process. How many respondents identified as a priority PR support for board members handled by firms from New York City?

@MayorLeeHarris We've been doing this conservative, austere approach for decades now with reducing the tax rate, and it doesn't work to improve our community...how about we try an approach that leads with investments we need?

I'm proud to announce that for the 7th year in a row, my budget presentation today will have no property tax increase. This is unprecedented for a Shelby County Mayor in recent years. In fact, this a.m., I’m proposing we cut the property tax rate by 20%.

@thedailyjustic @mickwright They might not want to touch this one, because it's the same as the commission's community enhancement grants...we didn't see them so forceful or any votes of "no confidence" the last couple of years w/ ignoring fed investigations and the rumors about abuse of their own program.

@mickwright What about the Board Member Strategic Funds? I have a spreadsheet that shows close to $600,000 spent on vague things like "Incentives," "Appreciation," "Luncheons," and "Beautification" during the 24-25 school year. The spending is out of control and not reaching classrooms.

This was misguided bill from the start...staggered elections make sense for elected bodies. The argument was put them at a time with more turnout...but Harris and other state reps were elected in primaries on the same ballot as school board with the same amount of turnout. 🤷🏽‍♂️
Laura D. Testino 〽️@ldtestino

2026 could be quite the year for school board elections should the county commission also vote to put all nine seats on the ballot dailymemphian.com/article/51392/…

It looks like Worth Morgan is trying to showcase the commitment to Trump's Republican party, while most Repubs in Shelby have tried to shield that connection in a cloak of nonpartisanship and moderate rhetoric. Looks like Worth may be looking to cast that cloak aside...
