The Winchester Round Table, hanging in the Great Hall of Winchester Castle, is a medieval tabletop bearing the names of the knights of King Arthur. Built in the 13th century, it was used for a tournament during the reign of Edward I of England and later repainted by Henry VIII.

Diary of Samuel Pepys
Diary of Samuel Pepys@DiaryOfPepys·
Friday 17 April 1663 Up by five o’clock as I have long done and to my office all the morning, at noon home to dinner with my father with us. Our dinner, it being Good Friday, was only sugarsopps and fish; the only time that we have had a Lenten dinner all this Lent. This morning Mr. Hunt, the instrument maker, brought me home a Basse Viall to see whether I like it … After dinner my father and I walked into the city a little, and parted and to Paul’s Church Yard, to cause the title of my English “Mare Clausum”to be changed, and the new title, dedicated to the King, to be put to it, because I am ashamed to have the other seen dedicated to the Commonwealth. So home and to my office till night, and so home to talk with my father, and supper and to bed. "sugarsopps" (sops of bread soaked in sweetened liquid, a simple, austere dish) John Selden (1584–1654) was the author. He wrote Mare Clausum in Latin (published 1635) and dedicated it to King Charles I.The 1652 English translation by Marchamont Nedham deliberately removed Selden’s dedication to Charles I and replaced it with a new one to “the Supreme Authority of the Nation – The Parliament of the Commonwealth of England.” Nedham also added Commonwealth arms and republican flourishes. Sam, ashamed of this, arranges a new title page dedicated to King Charles II. John Selden argues that the sea, like land, can be owned and controlled by a single nation, asserting England's historic sovereignty over the "British Seas" (including fishing and navigation rights) against Hugo Grotius's idea of the free, open sea (Mare Liberum). Selden's 'Mare Clausum'

Apr 20: Feast of Flann mac Maíle Dúin (†891), abbot of Iona. In early 17thC sources he was speculatively identified with the Flann commemorated #OTD. One 9thC stone from Iona reads: ‘A prayer for the soul of Flann’. Máel Brigte mac Tornáin succeeded him. 📸HES

Wallflowers do literally thrive on walls. The seeds are said to have arrived with the Caen limestone William the Conqueror imported from Normandy to build his castles from 1066 onwards. #CabbageFamily #WildflowerHour
