@TashJoeZA @sjcoalition I’ve just finished a book chapter on excrement and activism (as one does!), so if you need any more specific readings, happy to check my bibliography.

Experimented with peer grading for class presentations (30% weighting). Students gave each other 100% across the board. Opened discussion around class (!) solidarity and tragedy of the commons (I likely won’t repeat). On the whole, though…fine? Lesson in organised resistance!

@clarkformaths Perhaps check out some of the incredibly talented illustrators who’ve worked with @bookdash? You can see egs of their work open source here: bookdash.org/books/ A wide range of styles, & all made & illustrated within 12 hour sprint with a team of creatives. :)

I'm looking for a South African black female illustrator, preferably a mother, for an exciting book project. Anyone have any recommendations?

Took my @IESabroad students to @BerthaHouseCPT Activist Cafe to brainstorm their essays on land right protests. Amazing for them to be able to casually chat with people involved in their case studies (thanks @NSwartbooi @GavinSilber). A beautiful space for learning & connecting!

*dusts off Twitter log-in* Local performance joys! Took my ‘Power & Protest’ students to “Four Fathers” @BaxterTheatre & @Siphokazi_J’s #WeAreDyingHere: both exploring intimate legacies of gendered violence. @neomuyanga’s extraordinary evening of global protest song was a balm.

@TomCornford @brechtfast @la_louve_rouge_ My mother still has her (my?) pot. After I incorporated it into a short story about motherhood, a tooth pot was criticised as being “too macabre to be believable.” 100% not above forwarding this thread.

@Siphokazi_J This sounds 🔥. I have 4 Power and Protest students who’ll be studying gender activism this month: is there any way we can get them there?

@izzy_stuart Hey Izzy - I’ve got a friend who’s keen! But it’s probably just one ticket. So shout if you don’t clear both and I’m your gal. So sorry you can’t make it 😭

@AlanHirsch2 @Brianlevy387 @MandelaUCT Ah but both of you remain in the design, ethos and spirit of the School: a special and valued place that has sparked all kinds of connections. Looking forward to seeing what’s next!

Friday may have been my last teaching session in this program too. @Brianlevy387 and I opened the teaching when this program began eight years ago. Brian and the wonderful students we've had every year have been inspirational. Thanks for joining me on this journey @MandelaUCT

Yesterday's session with the 2022 mid-career Masters cohort was my final class at @MandelaUCT. It has been an inspiration & a privilege to help build the School. My thanks and appreciation to all with whom I have had the opportunity to work. @AlanHirsch2

@urbanjodi I miss feeling awkward about going the “wrong” way and, as such, having to gently greet the same (often old) people each lap.

I was once on Table Mountain and some tourists were wondering what that big body of water above the CBD was - they decided it must be a facility for rowing training (how luxurious!). 🧵

@urbanjodi Molteno used to be open to the public to sign in and enjoy. Being—in essence—a flat, reliable, secure 800m track in hilly Tam’kloof, it was the heart of the community’s fitness: a beloved space. From sprinters to gentle walkers, it was full am to eve. Then COVID, and closure.

2) should the reservoir be covered in some way to prevent evaporation and so that it’s valuable inner city m2 can be maximised - sports fields - or something - built on top. Not simple or cheap engineering wise, and so a cost/benefit - never mind heritage etc - quagmire.

@esterlevinrad I can already see how this works! My problem: I cannot unsee his Natalie Portman comments. Time has compromised a lot more than my under eye zone, Ester.

@ronderby Absolutely! These heroes, who’ve met this call at great personal risk, deserve our support as well as our praise. I know journalism is under its own target pressure, but please reconsider your enabling of anti-vax content. It doesn’t deserve any platform, and certainly not yours.

@ClusterAfrica Food for thought! I’m an academic, but also a fiction writer, social media devourer & journalist. I often think how these “modes” of mine so clearly influence and enrich each other...and how horrified purists in each would be to hear that. A big challenge: purists gatekeep entry.

I am interested in these connections, points of convergence (and of divergence). How can these connections be mutually beneficial - make writers and artists engage more with theory, and make academics make their work more accessible to practitioners? Anyway, back to my soup.- EJ

I'm having mushroom soup, thinking: most people probably don't know that mushrooms are genetically closer to humans than they are to plants. It makes me think of how the work of artists, writers especially, and that of academics are closer to each other than people realise. 1/2

Performance Studies provides a great theoretical lens for studying political dissent. My PhD department of Theatre & Performance Studies @Sydney_Uni is currently under threat with budget cuts. It’s more vital than ever to recognise the powerful global impact that this dpt offers.

It was great to reconnect with my former student Michaela Scott while reflecting on how embodied learning approaches and critical engagement with discomfort can be powerful learning tools. Thanks to @IESabroad for facilitating the cosy virtual chat!
