Every winter, millions of birds ingest traditional road salt, mistaking the crystals for food — often leading to dehydration and death. Sweden has developed a remarkable alternative: edible, eco-safe road salt made from beet extract, maize starch, and minerals that melt ice without poisoning wildlife. The new formula lowers freezing points like normal salt but dissolves into harmless organic components once temperatures rise. Birds that consume it get hydration and nutrients instead of deadly salt shock. Tests on highways showed reduced corrosion on cars, less damage to soil, and significantly fewer bird deaths. The innovation could transform winter road safety worldwide while protecting ecosystems.

The current state of JHB CBD clearly demonstrates that where there is urgency and agency, where there is a will and motivation, there is a way. In other words, the city does not need people who need to have a motivation, but rather leaders who HAVE motivation and a sense of agency.

And the case continues, as the #BlueLightMafia defence fails to have the case struck from the roll with their 174 application. Eight serving members of the South African Police Service’s Presidential Protection Services, attached to Deputy President Paul Mashatile, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court today where judgment was delivered on their bid to escape prosecution under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act. The police members are charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property, reckless or negligent driving, pointing a firearm, and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. Their legal team had argued there was no evidence on which the court could convict, which of course is not true. The defence claimed that witnesses were unreliable, contradictory or intoxicated and more. It was confirmed that video evidence IS admissible, that testimony from passengers and the driver about the pointing of firearms is accepted, and that evidence of injuries and malicious damage to the complainants’ vehicle is accepted against all accused. The judgement reaffirmed a fundamental principle: unlawful orders are not a defence. Police officers remain individually accountable when they act as a group or fail to intervene against colleagues committing unlawful acts. This case continues to highlight the deep culture of impunity within parts of the VIP Protection Services of the SAPS, where accountability has too often been replaced by what seems to be protectionism. In the internal SAPS disciplinary process, these same officers were cleared, and the same video footage which the court has now accepted as credible evidence was declared inadmissible by SAPS itself in disciplinary proceedings. The contradiction between SAPS’ internal process and the court outcome is stark. It reflects how far parts of the institution has drifted from the standards of professionalism and integrity. Trial resumes 23 - 27 March 2026. Today’s ruling sends a clear message: no one is above the law, not even those tasked with protecting the powerful. The @Our_DA will continue to monitor the case and give feedback. Thank you @ActionSocietySA for your continued support to the victims of the heinous incident. IC

Next time you think of a Pigeon in a negative way just think….. Pigeons Are Misunderstood Geniuses. Most people don't realize just how incredible Pigeons truly are. These gentle birds aren’t just loyal partners—they're brilliant, complex beings. Tucked inside their beaks are tiny magnetic crystals that act like a natural GPS, helping them navigate thousands of miles with stunning precision. They can also hear frequencies too low for us to detect, read polarized light patterns in the sky, and even see in ultraviolet light, giving them a vibrant view of the world we can't imagine. Pigeons are also remarkably intelligent. Studies show they can count, recognize their own reflections, understand abstract ideas, and even grasp probability, sometimes outperforming young children. When raising their young, they produce a special milk-like substance in their throats to nourish their chicks. They form lifelong bonds with their mates and use different coos and calls to communicate danger, love, and territory. History has seen their courage, too. During wartime, a pigeon named Cher Ami delivered a message that saved 194 soldiers—even after losing a leg. Sadly, despite all this, many pigeons were abandoned when we no longer “needed” them, and they stayed close to humans because that's what they knew. Pigeons are not pests. They are intelligent, emotional, deeply social beings that remember us. It's time we remember them. ❤️
