last semester was terrible for me; I was almost hospitalized. I felt I let my students down. but one came to my office today to say my course on dream interpretation changed her life—& she’s still good friends with her classmates. even at our worst, we can make a difference.

good morning. hope everyone is doing OK. I’m doing OK, just stressed out. I have lots of work due (along with being a mom) & am struggling to work. my brain hasn’t been right since my crisis. & I realize now I dissociated through most of it. I’m still trying to piece it together.

I just served on a search committee for a tenure-track line in contemporary American literature & I really want to post a thread of things I noticed & learned to help humanities PhDs on the market. at the same time, it’s such a lottery that these kinds of threads are borderline offensive. so I’m torn. what do you think?

Grades submitted. My first iteration of Plants & Diaspora and my first class at University of Maryland, College Park is in the books. I made some mistakes and will change many things, but I’m excited to teach it again twice in 2025-2026.

I didn’t sleep last night & I’m a wreck but I’m telling myself the only thing I have to do today is show up for my students, that’s it—even if none of them come. the learning communities we’ve built are proof there’s still reason to fight & work & hope. after that, I can collapse

oh a whim, I sent my seniors a short story they could read on Halloween for extra credit (Carmen Maria Machado’s “The Husband Stitch”). I guess I thought it might keep (some of) them out of trouble. waking up to their responses in my inbox was pure delight.

I know that many have already commented on this post but as a copyeditor, I have seen paper submissions that have these issues from all experience levels. Assigning this as a “grad student” problem doesn’t acknowledge the actual issues underlying publishing and peer review.

@KobysKing Dont be afraid to take a step back to reground yourself. As far as diss/apps/teaching goes, it’s better to take a break and come back to your work when you’re in a better mental space than to try and force something out. Slow and steady wins the race!

Feeling really overwhelmed this morning by the amount of stuff I have on my plate (job app stuff, diss chapters, teaching, personal life, etc.) Any words of encouragement or tips on navigating all of this would be greatly appreciated
