The period of Five Good Emperors was considered the best time in human history for a reason. It was a period of relative peace, economic growth and massive public works, like roads, temples, aqueducts and forums. This period was considered the peak of Pax Romana. This became possible because of adoptive succession which ensured stability. The future emperors did not get the throne by inheriting it from their fathers or by bribing Praetorian guards. The successor was chosen by their competence and their wisdom. There was no room for Civil Wars to erupt, which ensured internal stability. Because emperor's position was secure, he could dedicate all his focus to improve the Empire. It's worth noting that prosperity was achieved because emperors had absolute power. Because they ruled with wisdom, instead of a tyranny they managed to achieve utopia. Pax Romana ended when Commodus become emperor. He inherited the throne and instead of common good chose to chase vanity and richess. The period of Five Good Emperors is a good reminded that leaders with competence and virtue can turn states into paradise. But once this cycle is broken chaos returns.
