Listen as much as possible (최대한 많이 듣기) 아이들은 언어를 배울 때 첫 2년은 거의 듣기만 함. 아이뿐 아니라 모두가 그럼. 그래서 팟캐스트를 아무거나 닥치는 대로 들었음. 어차피 아무것도 이해 못 하지만 그냥 들음. 청소할 때, 게임할 때, 자기 전에 집중이 되든 안 되든 그냥 틀어뒀음. 핵심은 외국어 노출량을 최대화하겠다는 의지 그 자체임. 2. Read things many times (여러 번 반복해서 읽기) 아이들은 같은 책을 몇 번이고 계속 읽음. 그래서 거기서 배운 표현을 써먹기도 함. 책, 영화에서 나온 문장을 따로 적고 → 모르는 거 찾아보고 → 소리 내서 들어보고 → 여러 번 읽어봄. 아이들은 문법을 따로 공부하지 않음. 그냥 읽고 들으면서 자연스럽게 배움. 영화에서 뽑은 대사 5문장에서 단어, 표현, 문법, 접속사를 한꺼번에 배울 수 있었음. 나중에 "써먹을 것이다"라는 의도를 가지고 접근하는 게 포인트임. 3. Learn simple words (쉬운 단어부터) alone, together, be, have, answer, lie, get처럼 필수적으로 자주 쓰이는 어휘가 나오면, 쓰인 문장과 함께 통으로 적어놓음. 한 문장을 계속 반복해서 읽으면 나중엔 뇌가 그 문장 구조를 자동으로 만들어낼 수 있게 됨. 배운 걸 '자동적으로' 말하겠다는 목적의식이 깔려 있음. 4. Keep a journal (일기 쓰기) 쓰다 보면 쓰고 싶은데 못 쓰는 게 생김. 도와줄 사람도 없었음. 주제는 거창할 필요 없이 그냥 내 하루에 대해 적음. 그래서 구글 번역기의 도움을 받았음. 영어로 먼저 하고 싶은 말을 쓰고 결과를 받아 적는 식임. (지금은 챗GPT 덕에 훨씬 편할 듯) OUTPUT 훈련의 대표 격임. 5. Buy (and read) books (책 사서 읽기) 아동용은 읽기 싫어서 그냥 성인용을 삼. 물론 거의 이해 못 했지만 선택지가 이것뿐이라 생각했음. 그냥 책 가지고 다니면서 아무 데나 펼쳐서 아는 단어 있나 찾아봤음. 그게 재밌었음. 조금이라도 아는 부분이 나오면 자랑스러웠음. '노르웨이 성인들이 읽는 건데 나도 이해한다'는 기분임. 영어는 장기전임. 100% 이해하려는 완벽주의는 절대 오래 못 감. 6. Listen to audio books (오디오북 듣기) 종이책과 더불어 오디오북도 들었음. 어떻게 발음되는지 모르니까, 오디오를 들으면서 따라가며 읽었음. 한 챕터를 먼저 듣고(리스닝 훈련) → 그다음 다시 오디오 들으면서 책을 읽었음. 같은 영상을 왕복 3~4번 반복해서 보는 것만으로도 이해도가 상당히 올라가는 경우가 많음. 7. Use series and movies (드라마·영화 활용) 처음엔 자막 없이 보고(뭘 알아듣나 확인) → 노르웨이어 자막 켜고 → 영어 자막으로 → 다시 노르웨이어 자막으로. 하나의 에피소드 통째가 아니라 씬 별로(2~5분 단위) 봄. 지금도 이렇게 많이 배우고 있음. 외국어 학습엔 끝이 없다는 뜻임. 8. Write your stories with your vocabulary lists (내 어휘로 이야기 쓰기) 먼저 모국어로 스토리를 씀 → 아는 원어민한테 바꿔달라고 함 → 소리 내서 여러 번 읽어봄. 외울 때까지. 책, 영화 같은 외부 자료를 받아먹는 INPUT이 아니라, 자신의 이야기를 스스로 외국어로 바꿔보는 노력임. 9. Learn sentences by heart (문장 통째로 외우기) 여러 번 소리 내서 읽어봄. 중간에 버벅임 없이 쭉쭉 말할 수 있을 때까지. 그러면 뇌가 생각할 필요 없이 발음, 어휘, 문법이 바로 나옴. 10. Speak to yourself (혼잣말하기) 거의 초창기 때부터 했음. 나의 하루, 본 영화, 읽은 책, 찍은 사진을 묘사하는 식임. 내 이야기를 스스로 생각해서 말한다는 점에서 4번, 8번과 같은 선상의 OUTPUT 훈련임. 11. Don't give up (포기하지 않기) 외국어는 계속 노력하는 한 분명 실력이 늘게 됨. 당장 눈에 띄는 결과가 보이지 않는 건 너무나 정상적인 일임. 오히려 조급한 태도가 스스로 의지를 깎아먹는 경우가 많으니 주의할 것. 정리하면 노출량을 최대로 늘리고, INPUT에서 끝내지 말고 일기·혼잣말·글쓰기 같은 OUTPUT으로 이어가고, 조급해하지 않는 것. 이 세 축이 11가지 방법을 관통하는 핵심임.
