One of the most engrossing things I've read in a while in The Economist is our special report on the present and future of assisted reproduction (IVF and other things). Incredible, and incredibly personal, work by @catBrahic & @SachaNauta economist.com/technology-qua…

Thank you to everyone who sent messages of support after my MTB accident last week - I'm now back home. The crash left me with a collapsed lung & neck fractures, so I'll be recovering for a while, but feel lucky it wasn't worse. And thank you so much for the wonderful care NHS @gloshospitals xx

You might see some pre-scheduled tweets from me but I'm stepping away from twitter and work for a little while - a mountain bike accident at the weekend has left me rather battered :(

@AkshatRathi See below for the adaptation argument. As for mitigation, I have never said or written that we should "try to limit warming to 2C". Exactly the opposite. There is a detailed discussion in the piece.

I struggled and still struggle with the moral arguments about stating 1.5C as "dead". And whether there are benefits to saying it. For me, the adaptation argument is what sways it (see my previous thread) but do read Kevin too.
Kevin Anderson@KevinClimate

@TheEconomist 5/5 I agree that in any meaningful sense a 50% chance of not exceeding 1.5°C is now no longer possible. But a 1/6 chance remains viable if we are prepared to open up genuine political dialogue rather than hide the fears of us relative few hi-emitters behind net zero &future tech.

@RobertHoglund You could say that the world (including the rich world) owes a debt to those delegates who went to Paris prepared to walk out on a deal that did not include 1.5...

@catBrahic Important point. People are seeing this as failure, but aim for the stars, reach the moon (from where you can reach the stars more easily).

This has been in the works, piecemeal, for far longer than I care to say &so huge thanks are due to everyone who spoke to me over many months. During that time I vacillated btw thinking I was just stating the bleeding obvious & why bother, and yet (1/n) economist.com/interactive/br…

@hausfath @shannonosaka Absolutely! It's smth we have all been thinking about, esp this year. And I doubt this will be the last we hear/read/write about it. Such is the life of totems and taboos.

Finally, from one of the many excellent conversations I had, in this case w/ @Oliver_Geden: consider the difference btw saying, as the IPCC does, that 1.5 "is achievable if [long list of stretch milestones]" & saying 1.5 "is impossible unless [same list]". They mean...(9/n)
