It’s that time of year - folks asking us about #bumblebees - WHY THEY’RE SEEING THEM ON THE GROUND - so here’s a thread to explain.

Every queen that survives means a new colony that gets to exist & produce queen #bees for next year!

@theladyfarmer That looks absolutely amazing. So much variety, it’s almost like a restaurant menu! No wonder British kids are fussy eaters when all they get in school is tomato pasta or fish and chips. This encourages children to try all foods. Do you know if it is locally sourced?

@thepdviking Fun fact. My Grandad built the trig point behind you!

Little jaunt up to Lose Hill and back at lunchtime.
Fantastic vistas from the top 🤣
Managed to see a little ❄️
Saw one stone stack, which is no more!
Only went on my arse once coming down, the mud was horrendous. I always slip on that bit 🤣.
Good to stretch the legs though.

It’s difficult not to feel pretty cynical about these kind of requests from @DefraGovUK
We fill out the survey..
Then they use it against us, to drop payments for environmental benefits to below the minimum cost
‘Because farmers love doing it’

English

@Farmer_Tom_UK @FarmersGuardian I think it’s a good idea, it shows a willingness to try & understand the complexity of farming. I can’t understand why lots of people are up in arms about it. Funny bunch!
English

@FarmersGuardian Great move. Grown-up decision-making by DEFRA even admitting staff need ag training, and great provision via a proper, working farm with broad applications, sectors, and above all data.
English

🚨Defra has awarded a £650,000 contract to provide agricultural training for its own staff.
The four-year contract will give officials practical, on-farm experience covering soil, crops, water, livestock, commercial and more.
For many participants, it will be their first visit to a working farm.

@JoeWStanley @VictoriaAtkins For what it’s worth @JoeWStanley I think it’s a good idea and a step in the right direction. 👍🏻
English

I’m proud of the excellent conversations I’m having with civil servants as part of this important training programme.
It’s easy to criticise. Disappointing that @VictoriaAtkins would characterise as a ‘waste of money’. It began under her govt.

@KellyFarmWife @NoFarmsNoFoods @1GarethWynJones @Evsthetractor I think it’s a good idea. And if he’s going to make a bit of money out of it - good on him. We all moan about DEFRA not having a clue about farming, this might be one step to help with that. I might put myself forward to teach dairy skills for £450k! 🙂

So let me get this right, Joe 'not a farmer' Stanley has brokered a deal with DEFRA for £650k to teach DEFRA employees about farming?!

WHAT ABOUT ACTUAL FARMERS? The ones who are the REAL EXPERTS in farming. I know a few who would be more than happy to be involved!
WHAT WE DON’T NEED ARE MORE BOARDS TELLING US WHAT IS BEST FOR US.
