Clive Tyldesley reports on Coventry City vs Derby County in March 1988, with a pitch that you wouldn’t get close to playing on these days. No postponement. Same for both teams. Get on with the game.

This result in one of our safest seats is a disaster but not a surprise. Why would anyone vote for us? The only reason we gave was to ‘stop Reform’. We appear scared and flat-footed, unsure of ourselves and uncomfortable in our own skin. Lacking identity or purpose, we allowed ourselves to become the stand-in for a failed status quo. The country is crying out for both real, tangible change in their daily lives, and a compelling and hopeful vision of where we’re heading.

As we wrote in November, the central machinery of the party lacks clarity and direction. That is why they have resorted to administrative and procedural methods to block Andy Burnham. It is a profound mistake.

The ruling elite is dangerously behind social and economic events. And Starmer - stuck in his No.10 bunker - can’t deal with reality. The closest comparison to dying hyper-liberalism is the Soviet collapse. Fixing this will be painful - a truth which must be faced.

The biggest threat to the UK at the moment is tentativeness and cowardice among the political elite. They have no idea how much contempt people feel when they flinch from doing what needs to be done.

It’s Roberto Baggio’s birthday, so here’s 2m 26s of him being utterly divine on a football pitch. Cuban cigar of a footballer. What a joy to watch him play.

There was something of a national scandal when ‘Ouija Board Ouija Board’ by Morrissey came out. His statement in response is just brilliant 🤩 Thank you to Viva Morrissey for this gem from the archives

No real attacking movement or patterns of play from Tottenham. So disjointed and whenever anybody gets the ball, there's no option for them to pass to. Dreadful football.

The assumption that Starmer should go for the good of the country assumes things won’t get considerably worse under a new Labour leader. To be clearer - he must resign - but it could get even worse…

This week exposed the moral and intellectual rot at the heart of our party. Glib arrogance, vicious court gossip and a culture of conformity. A willingness to look the other way for factional reasons, blind to how it looks to the outside world. And for what? In the careerist scramble for a brief moment in the limelight all imagination and curiosity are crushed, and so we are left empty of ideas and empty of soul. How far we have fallen as a party. This must be the end of New Labour.

Lord Mandelson allegedly passed confidential UK government information to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Prime Minister's response? Make him our man in Washington. This isn't just bad judgement, it's a betrayal of the national interest. Starmer must go. "This is likely the tip of the iceberg. It's astonishing how un-patriotic the people who govern this country are." — @WilliamClouston Read our full press statement below: 👇

Reform aren’t new - they’re a continuation of the Brexit Party formed eight years ago - and their governing credibility hasn’t grown in that time. What has grown is the amount of desperation among people who’ve understandably had enough. Their support hasn’t risen because their credibility or capacity to govern has improved - it hasn’t. It’s risen because confidence in everyone else has collapsed. The desperation and need to hope in something is understandable, but it’s not a good strategy, nor does hope that Reform will do a good job mean they will. Whenever I raise concerns about Reform’s readiness or ability to govern, the response is: “Well what do you suggest then Henry?” My answer is that you don’t need to decide who to support yet. What do all need to do is demand detail from anyone asking for power before we give it to them. If they can’t or won’t provide it, then they are either not ready for power, or not capable of governing well.

Reform UK are now saying they want to re-industrialise Britain. No detail, just another “we will…” statement. First they nicked the @SDPhq strap line “Family, Community, Nation” (in use by the SDP since 2018) and turned it into “Family Community, Country”, and now they’re trying to nick the SDP’s re-industrialisation ideas. The SDP re-industrialisation plan was published in 2024: sdp.org.uk/policies/indus… That’s fine, no problem, so long as it gets done. But who will write Reform’s plans if they ever get into power?
