In 1507-15, the Portuguese crown built the fort of Our Lady of the Conception in Hormuz, to control trade from India and charge hefty tolls to passing ships. From the outset, holding the fort and controlling the Strait of Hormuz required constant fighting with local emirs; by 1662 the Shah of Persia (backed by British forces) took it for good. After a detailed account of the back-and-forth in a fierce and bloody seven‑month naval battle in 1521–22 in the Strait of Hormuz, Commander Saturnino Monteiro, in the first volume of his treatise "Batalhas e Combates da Marinha Portuguesa,” concluded: "...and thus ended this stupid and useless war of Hormuz, with everything remaining as it had been before."

@KevinFrisz @jbailey @TheStalwart So, yes, then lose 1.5mln bbls/d over time. But my point when discussing WH administration planning and policy anything is possible. Anything and everything is on the table. It will implement any solution they think will work for the shortest period of time.

@KevinFrisz @jbailey @TheStalwart At risk today is 4mln bbls/d of current crude exports. US could given out crony export licenses for ~2mln bbls/d. Then promise a refill rate at 500kbd with ceiling floor px offered over next 2 years. Light crude always been about 45% of SPR.

@KevinFrisz @jbailey @TheStalwart That's too logical an outcome. Trump admin could offer guaranteed floor price (say $65-70/bbl over next 3 years). Need to part refill the SPR. Refiners would have min stockholding levels imposed. US becomes oil island fortress - that's also highly dysfunctional for px signals.

@jbailey @TheStalwart But here's the problem. US oil co's export 40% of their light sweet production. If trump were to ban that, they would have to cap those wells. They might not remain profitable on the remaining wells. (And needless to say, the oil stockholders would be pissed.)

Why would the US capture Kharg Island? Just sit outside the Strait and blockade. #OOTT
