This is isn’t confusing at all if you interrogate these people’s actual beliefs and the way they think society should be structured. They imagine a separate group of women, “whores,” made up of sex workers, “loose women,” hostesses at expensive nightclubs, and potentially divorced women/widows who would serve the function of men “gaining experience” while preserving virginal brides. They’re kind of mimicking Victorian class attitudes where this “virginal woman” really only applied to upper class women. The whole thing was of course a myth, most upper class women had affairs constantly (especially because so few marriages were love marriages) but it was kept shrouded in secrecy and covered up by shotgun weddings or women just passing off offspring from an affair as their husbands.
