Correct I would also say it’s an inconsistent standard to ask Clark to tone it down while ignoring other crashouts on the team One of the most vital photos of the tournament was Caitlin, Paige, and Angel all standing in identical crashout poses at a bad call Why is only Caitlin singled out?

@cc22report Here's my take on how I felt about it by September of that year. "We could have had 10 minutes a game of Caitlin taking 3 shots a game and feeding A'ja/Phee/Stewie, but instead we got a rested Caitlin TEARING THE LEAGUE APART after the break."

I don’t like arguing on this app Like, genuinely, there is approximately a zero percent chance that we are gonna convince each other of anything and life is just too short However If you quote tweet me and say that someone didn’t say something I said that they said I promise you I have receipts

@steve_sherwood Which I totally understand Just don’t tell me you’re bringing the best 12 then when clearly you’re not

And then of course the argument then turns to an injured Chelsea Gray and a diminished DT being taken over a clearly deserving CC. I don’t even have a problem with that thought process so much as just the moving the goalposts and the dishonesty in their public communications. If they had just said “she’s not going” from the beginning it would have sucked but better than what transpired

@cc22report And not, "we weren't convinced she could compete on the International Level or with other US team members." More, just that it would be bumping a vet who had been to the camps, maybe been on previous US Teams, etc. I disagreed, but I get that thought process.

@steve_sherwood I understand the context, and I admit that the first quote wasn’t the best example, that was the Rizzotti quote I cited later, but both quotes served to prove the claim that Team USA officials did in fact say she wasn’t good enough. I agree the Rizzoti quote is clearer

@cc22report I think you are correct, but I do think you're missing a bit of the context of what Staley was saying at the time. I think she was saying, "there wasn't enough quality early body of work in Caitlin's first weeks in the W to justify replacing a quality vet."

Considering your initial post was calling me out for putting words in Team USA’s mouth that they never said (a claim I have since provided multiple sources proving that in fact they did say everything I said they said) you sure are eager to make arguments Team USA never made And you’ll notice everyone who made that foolish decision is now fired Because it was a terrible decision that wasted an untold amount of money in lost viewership, sales, and interest in Team USA WBB To your specific argument related to seniority, it is an argument that flies directly in the face of everything every single member of Team USA said at the time - Rizzotti, Staley, Reeves, all of them But it is undoubtedly true Which is why I just wish they would have said their real opinion They didn’t take Caitlin because they didn’t want to, simple as that I would have at least respected their honesty

I haven’t dropped it. She wasn’t making the team. Just like DT & BG were never not making it. Seniority is also a thing. Thats why Juju is going to have to fight for her life to make the 2028 team. It’s not just gonna be given to her just cuz she’s from LA and it will make a cool story. She’s gonna be battling players like Rickea & Sonia for that spot. And in 2036 or maybe even 2040 when Caitlin ain’t what she used to be, she’ll be in DT & Chelsea’s position.

Here’s a NYT article with Jenn Rizzotti, the head of Team USA, saying they were taking “the best 12” (including an injured Chelsea Gray with zero stats and Diana Taurasi with worse stats than Caitlin) nytimes.com/athletic/55566… And I’ve noticed you’ve dropped the “camp experience” argument like a hot potato

@cc22report Sooooo the Team USA organization didn’t explicitly say that lol. And Dawn said if she played like she did in the 2nd half she’d be in higher consideration. So still not making it. Cool.

That is actually 100% untrue on both counts Dawn Staley said specifically on the Olympics broadcast that at the time they determined that she was not good enough, and if they had it to do over again with the way she was playing at the All Star break that they would probably have made a different decision And at the time when Caitlin was not able to make it to the Olympic Camp because she was still involved in the tournament Team USA said her initial WNBA performance would be an acceptable substitute It was only after they refused her admission onto the team that they doubled back

@cc22report Also - teams renting in bulk likely get discounts with the properties they work with. I bet there is a team or two that own the property that houses their players.

Excellent I always thought that the whole housing thing was kind of a red herring and that the league pulled it out of the CBA just to have another bargaining chip Because I did the math and even in expensive cities the amount teams spent on the housing stipends for their entire player base amounted to less than 1% of total team revenue And also because if housing was no longer guaranteed it would just become another recruiting feature, teams who guaranteed housing to their players would have a leg up against teams that didn't, similar to the facilities issue So I'm glad they pretty much came to some level of sanity with this It's true that players making a bunch of money probably are set But if league average is $500k, by definition half the league makes under that Glad they are being looked out for Big dub
Front Office Sports@FOS

Details from the WNBA CBA, FOS has learned: • Salary cap could exceed $10 million • Rookie minimum starts at $270,000 • Team-provided housing for all players first 3 years
