One of the earliest and most outspoken critics/opponents of AI was Joseph Weizenbaum, the computer scientist responsible for the first chatbot. As he made clear in his writing, much of his opposition to AI was based on his deep understanding of it…

Research reveals a paradox: the more people understand AI, the more hesitant they may become to embrace it. s.hbr.org/46DQLOW

Colbert has been one of the most vocal critics of the current administration of anyone on television. It requires precious little imagination to see the cancellation of Late Show — a decision that its host was blatantly displeased with — as a quid pro quo to get the FCC to approve the merger. rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-m…

The Writers Guild of America is looking into the cancellation of THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT, asking Paramount to be investigated for bribery by the New York state attorney general, relating to the President. Colbert is #1 for his time slot, with increased viewership in younger demographics since the beginning of the year. Something for sure smelled rotten about this move by CBS. variety.com/2025/tv/news/w…

It's true testament to @JensenAckles's ability to make us care deeply about his characters in such a short space of time that my constant worry is not about a nuclear threat it's whether Mark is hurting, how he's coping and if he's going to survive. #Countdown 😱🤔😔💔🫂♥️😭🥺😓

It- A few years back, there was a guy named Brandon Mayfield, an ordinary attorney living in Oregon. He had a wife, kids, a law practice, and lived a pretty normal life. Then, out of nowhere, the FBI showed up at his door, arrested him, and accused him of being involved in the Madrid train bombings in Spain. Why? Because a fingerprint database flagged him as a “match.”
Turns out, the database was wrong. He’d never even been to Spain. But because all his personal data was in government systems, and because the authorities trusted their “master file” more than common sense, his life was turned upside down. He was detained for weeks, his house was searched, his family was terrified, and his reputation was trashed, all because a computer said so. Now, imagine that, but on steroids.
With Palantir building a master database, it’s not just your fingerprints. It’s your texts, your emails, your medical records, your purchases, your movements, your friends, your opinions—everything— all in one place, all cross-referenced, all searchable by people you’ll never meet.
If the system makes a mistake, or if someone in power decides you’re a “problem,” you could be flagged, investigated, or even punished, without ever knowing why, and with no way to defend yourself. And it’s not just about mistakes.
Think about how this kind of power could be abused. Maybe you go to a protest, or you post something critical of the government online. Suddenly, you’re on a list. Maybe you lose your job, or you can’t get a loan, or you’re denied entry to an event.
This isn’t science fiction. It’s already happened in places like China, where the government uses massive databases to control who can travel, who can work, and who can speak out. The bottom line:
A master database isn’t about keeping you safe. It’s about making sure you can be watched, tracked, and controlled.
If you think “I have nothing to hide, so I have nothing to fear,” remember: Brandon Mayfield had nothing to hide, either.
But when the system gets it wrong—or when the people in charge decide you’re inconvenient, your life can be ruined in an instant. That’s what this means. And that’s why it matters.

When the internet becomes a place where AI systems generate content for other AI systems to consume, humans become second-class entities, whose well-being, autonomy, and personal development are not even a concern. From my latest essay, “Google AI Search: The Humanless Internet” (link below)
