Coming soon! #NinoHaratischwili #TheLackOfLight tr. Charlotte Collins & Ruth Martin. @HarperViaBooks: This immersive, character-driven epic is one to get lost in, especially for fans of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Quartet, Isabel Allende & stories that centre female friendship.

@cctranslates Just Finished "The Tobacconist" by Seethaler that you had translated. What a fine Book and what a fine Translation. I was hooked from the start - simple Language that has captured all the "Austro-German" Nuance that Oozes out of the narration. Thank you very much!

This beautiful novel, located between Iran and Germany, came out in the UK last week. 'The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran' ... what savagely ironic timing. Look at this gorgeous writing by author Shida Bazyar and translator @the_germanist. Please read it. shorturl.at/P0tz8

@restisents @richardosman @MarinaHyde You wonder if, after films, Trump will go after ‘foreign’ books next. He already has. NEA funding for many small presses specializing in international literature has been cancelled, as their projects ‘no longer align with the administration’s priorities’. shorturl.at/KQhZx

@RobGMacfarlane I've seen and heard quite a few in my garden this winter, to my relief. They used to settle in the huge leylandii next door that were cut down a while ago; I was afraid they might not come back.

@jadeAfitton Mm, no. I read 'Wuthering Heights' when I was about eight, and look where that got me.

Having the horrible realisation that if I’d read more novels when I was younger I probably wouldn’t have made as many catastrophic mistakes.

@DeanEggitt A week later this was what I had to do - GP, then (different) hospital. After 18 hrs in A&E + 17 on a trolley in the ED, I was finally admitted and had 1.75 litres of pleural fluid drained from my lung. The extra stress, both for me and on the NHS, was entirely avoidable.

@DeanEggitt Sitting in front of a lung surgeon two weeks after lung surgery & complaining that I couldn't breathe, she insisted that she was a surgeon, not a respiratory doctor, & if I wanted someone to listen to my chest I should see my GP or go to A&E. No wonder both are overwhelmed.

Why are patients coming to me for pain relief and sick notes immediately after having had surgery? Why didn't their surgical team provide these basic essentials after an intervention? Genuine question...

@JordanCrane2 @hausofhemlock All the above, and other eminently sensible suggestions others have posted. The most basic measures, and simplest to implement, are mandating FFP2/3s for everyone, plus STAFF TRAINING. The doctors and nurses I see regularly have no clue about C19, and are entirely unbothered.

What are the most practical things healthcare and hospitals can do to reduce Co vid and other airborne infections? I have a direct line of feedback to administrators and want to give practical suggestions from C safe community members. Pls comment your best suggestions.

@EffieEss64 @wesstreeting @AmandaPritchard This was pretty much exactly my experience of A&E at the beginning of October. (18hr wait, then another 17 hrs on a trolley in the ED before they could find me a bed & somewhere to put it.) I felt so bad for everyone working there, and so grateful that you all continue to do so.

@ElliotElinor I used to play in Tom’s Midnight Garden as a child - a friend lived in Philippa Pearce’s old house, near Cambridge. It was just like the book, which I love.

@Hossylass @PrognosticChats FFS. I had to ask *every single* doctor & nurse in the *heart and lung hospital* to please put on a baggy blue in the 4 days I was in for surgery. I wore an FFP3 for 4 days non-stop, no problem. One nurse made a big fuss because it was “really itchy”. He was with me 10 mins max.

@cctranslates @PrognosticChats Urgh. Did a lung function test and the lung function nurse said she wouldnt ever wear a mask again as (and I shit you not); "It left these little marks on my face". She was in her 50s and had plenty of creases on her face already. Talk about misplaced vanity.

@CounsellingSam @FionaSi05717634 I find the Handhany FFP3s very comfortable - they fit well, and the (soft) moulding means they don’t cling to your nose and mouth. I wore them 24/7 during my recent stay in hospital for lung surgery, including during very reduced lung capacity.

Given that we're in a Winter Surge of Covid, Flu, Norovirus, RSV: IF the government asked you to wear an FFP3 mask 😷 to protect you, your loved ones, and the NHS, would you do it?
