My second article with @Alex_Phelan has been published at SCT! Building on an analysis of propaganda, policy documents and secondary literature, we examine how the PYD instrumentalisted gender relations to establish, consolidate and adapt to the threat of losing control in #Syria

🚨It’s out! Our new article (co-authored with soon-to-be Dr. @ce_schmid) examines how shifts in gender relations advanced the PYD’s broader politico-military strategy during three phases of insurgent control (2011–2018). It’s open access below!👇🏼 tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

We find that the PYD constructed distinct ideologies about men and women to elicit global support. Nonetheless, its discourse of inclusive gender equality contradicted with its governance strategy at the structural level, and its informal practices on the ground.

🚨Our new article is out, focussing on how insurgencies can be understood as gendered organisations! @ce_schmid and I provide a framework to understand the unique nature of insurgencies as highly strategic, political, and gendered entities🚨 tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

The article builds on and bridges gaps between existing feminist and gender focused literature. We hope that our framework will further enable scholars to examine how gender is constructed in insurgencies, at the level of culture, structure and agency.

Excited to announce my first article with @Alex_Phelan is out at CST! Adopting a gendered organisational theory approach, we demonstrate how insurgencies construct and reproduce gender relations in complex and sometimes contradictory ways.

In my GNET insight, I argue that the internet is enabling terrorist groups to more effectively exploit gender dynamics including gender ideologies, policies, practices and participation.

The next piece in GNET's #16DaysOfActivism series by @ce_schmid at @GpsMonash explores how the Islamic State effectively utilises online spaces to instrumentalise gender at the level of ideology, policies, participation, and practices and to what effect. gnet-research.org/2023/11/29/gen…

Was an absolute privilege to attend the @AIIANational Conference on behalf of @GpsMonash . Heard from some brilliant minds on the future of Australian foreign policy in an increasingly complex geo political landscape.
