@BeachLoverOnt @TorontoStar I don't know when the government paid for enough tissues for a class. Every year in September my kids teachers ask parents to all contribute a box so they can have a supply for the year.

@TorontoStar “Classroom supplies” - you mean paper, paper towels and tissues?!?! Now teachers have to buy their own Kleenex for their students?!? #onted

One of our first chart-toppers of the new millennium was the weirdo genre fusion “Sexx Laws” from the king of weirdo genre fusions, Beck. More about our most played song on this day in January 2000 on #EdgeTBT with @mkbowyer just after 12pm.

Auschwitz Memorial
Auschwitz Memorial@AuschwitzMuseum·
Creating fake, AI-generated images of Auschwitz and other camps is a dangerous act of distortion. Social platforms - especially Facebook - are directly responsible for enabling and amplifying their spread. This matters because such content does not merely falsify history; it actively harasses the memory of the victims. Photography has always carried an implicit social contract: when we look at a photograph, we trust that a photographer stood in a real place, at a real moment, and preserved a fragment of reality. This trust is foundational to historical documentation. Camp photographs from Auschwitz are not illustrations; they are evidence. AI-generated images break this contract while imitating its appearance. They are not photographs, yet they are presented in visual language that mimics documentary photography, deliberately exploiting the viewer’s learned trust in photographic sources. Today, when users search for “Auschwitz” on Facebook, an increasing number of results consist of fabricated, AI-generated images and misleading posts rather than authentic historical documentation. By allowing these distortions to surface, circulate, and gain visibility, Facebook directly contributes to the erosion of factual understanding of the complex history of Auschwitz, which we try to protect. That is why we believe the platforms should take responsibility by actively moderating such content and clearly flagging fabricated imagery. Memory and historical truth deserve stronger protection.

AI ALERT: In my undergraduate and graduate work - in 1988 through 1992 - I researched an implemented "parallel distributed processing" models, aka "neural networks", aka (these days) "Large Language Models" (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, Grok, etc. All such tech is founded upon an epistemology called "nominalism", and all of it mistreats correlation as causation. In other words: "Jim put a stick of gum into his mouth and then he got hit by lightning, so putting gun in your mouth causes you to get hit by lightning". There are an unlimited number of such irrational arguments (see "witches" and "Monty Python", for example). It is not "intelligent". It is "pattern completion" on a very good scale. By "pattern completion" I mean, for example: "A wink is as good as a..." (and you might be experienced enough to say "nod"). Another example: "Once bitten..." you might say "twice shy". Or another example: "Six of one...", and you might say "half-dozen of another". If you were to say to an LLM something like: "See you later", it might respond "Not if I see you first", especially if it has been told to respond in a playful or comedic mode. In short, today's so-called "AI" is an elaborate Myna bird. An LLM is incapable of producing answers that are not a mish-mash of word strings that are correlated with the wording of your question. An LLM is not "thinking" or "reasoning" etc.. It is just...averaging...correlating. It has no mechanism for causation. It is purely Humean (meaning: modeled on the philosophy of David Hume). The result: Garbage In -> Garbage Out. If an LLM is trained on the bullshit low-value garbage opinions expressed on the Internet, instead of upon the knowledge of masters in their respective crafts, it will provide the user only with uninventive, often irrational, but *popular* opinions about everything. Now, I'm not dissing "popular opinions": many of them are right. But it would be foolish to conclude that some LLM said X is true, therefore X is true. If you are using an LLM well, you will take its advice with a grain of salt, think it through YOURSELF, question whatever makes no sense and - most importantly - do REAL WORLD tests of what it suggests, before concluding that its advice/answers are compatible with reality. I've done that, and I quite value LLMs for giving me ideas to consider and test. But I would never just trust whatever an LLM says, any more than I would trust a show of hands about what should be done with someone else's hard-earned money. My post is motivated by @rickbeato's video, today. Check it out, because it demonstrates quite concretely what I express in more abstract terms, above: youtube.com/watch?v=TiwADS…

@Metric This question is posed often in my household - because my kids keep hearing your song - and while the kids go to is The Beatles, I am always trying to give a good argument for The Stones.

@GRT_ROW I really don't understand why there is no discount for students. At $104/month if my high school student misses a day or two for illness in a month with a holiday or a PD Day it would have been cheaper to pay a stored value fare for each ride that month.

Starting July 1, fares will be changing to balance value and affordability with the rising cost of operating transit. • Cash fare increases to $4 • Monthly pass increases to $104 (1/2)
