Some NRL clubs are reportedly already budgeting for a $14.5 million salary cap in 2028 as they negotiate new 2-3 year player contracts, with certainty around the next cap crucial for long-term deals. Peter V’landys said the NRL’s long-term goal is a $20 million salary cap, which could eventually see club grants exceed $27 million, but stressed player payments won’t jump overnight. “We’ll make that decision pretty quickly.” “We need the RLPA approval on it and we also need the clubs’ support.”

NRL clubs are in talks with Peter V’landys over what could become the richest funding deal in the game’s history. For context, clubs received $17 million in grants this season, while the 2026 salary cap is $11.95 million. That funding doesn’t just cover player wages — it also helps pay for football department expenses such as coaching staff, high performance, pathways and other club operations. The report says clubs are now seeking a $7 million funding buffer on top of the 2028 salary cap. If the salary cap rises to the forecast $15.5 million, clubs would receive grants of around $22.5 million+ each, with grants potentially increasing further if the competition expands to 20 teams.
