Being marine mammals, whales need to return to the surface regularly to breathe, underwater they are apnea. 👉During a dive, "fibrous plugs" will block the blowholes (nasal cavities) and prevent water from entering their airway. #humpbackwhales #whales

As they blow out of the water, whales contract their muscles to clear their blowholes for breathing. Water could eventually enter these cavities but it will be expelled when they exhale.
