I think its more than that. Yes, there is no incentive to be a good teacher. But there is incentive for longevity. Teachers are incentivized to merely last a long time. More years is more pay and more financial security. There are zero incentives toward development, newness, novelty, revelation, change, etc. It's simply a really poor incentive structure.

Physical tools that help us orient to reality are essential to retain as more information digital. I've been prototyping a set of "attention cards" that I use every morning to help me place attention in novel and directed circumstances.

Ontological frames on digital learning tools are virtually absent. There are some developers who are doing this. These are the ones to trust. The only ones to trust.

@normonics @sage_teacher You guys are perhaps the only learning app developers who are designing ontologically. I was just telling a friend the other day: AI is forcing us to confront ontologies like nothing else before. And I think you guys are perhaps the only developers who understand that.

I think we need to see what the <role_boundary> line of code is in every learning app, if they exist in others at all. This is beyond pedagogy, and why you guys are one of the very few apps I'll ever trust with my children. This is ontological.

@sage_teacher A massive boon. And not only for the content, but for the ontological way of thinking. There are too many good thinkers out there to ignore. Which is an interesting idea: organizing curriculum by thinkers instead of by content. I think there's something to that.

Part 13: The Birth of America America wins the war! The founding of America is a mythological event. It wasn't just the founding of a nation but the founding of a set of values. America produced a government the world had never seen before. But more importantly, it produced a type of person the world had never seen before. Some people call it rugged individualism. Some talk about freedom and agency. Many think of the American dream, that anyone can rise on the basis of hard work and merit. All of these qualities of the American spirit were present throughout the events leading up to and through the Revolutionary War. The characters are folk heroes. The events full of drama. The stories are timeless. But the beautiful thing is that it all happened. And it had to be such a perfect story to birth the greatest nation in the history of the world. God bless America!

Technologies are like advisors of kings. The king must discern which is wise, which is ignorant, which is arrogant, which is helpful, which is manipulative. The challenges of AI and technology are not new. They are just more readily accessible. We are challenged to abdicate our authority every day.

Abdication of agency, attention, and the primacy of experience is the great threat to humanity. Technology/AI is not the threat itself, but the catalyst of it. Abdication of committed participation is the threat. It always has been, and always will be.

Two things humans uniquely do. Context complexity: Overlay and navigate different contexts in a particular situation. Committment: Close gaps between what is and what can be, at both a high level (the gap between what we perceive and what we pay attention to) and a more granular one (the gap between what we decide on and what we act on).

Orientation without attention is conditioning: observation becomes stimulus; decision and action becomes response. The committment gap gets collapsed. This is how we lose agency. Not because of AI, but because we abdicate attention.

Some of the best parents I know are struggling with their teens and tech use (particularly cell phones). What's frightening is that they have little to no advice. Artificial contexts are collapsing young people's ability to attend to the world, their loved ones, and themselves.
