Finally, gov't has an alibi to jettison its nonsensical 1.5m housing delivery target. Hopefully this is taken as an opportunity to recalibrate and get onto a more sensible long-term track which includes fixing our skills shortage, and focus on controlling costs of production.
Ridge & Frost@RidgeandFrost

🗣️ 'You pledged to build 1.5m homes by the end of the parliament. Are you on track to reach that target?' - @SophyRidgeSky 🗣️ 'We still think we can reach that target... the headwinds from the Iran war do not help' - Minister for Housing & Planning, @mtpennycook

@AaronBastani Agree this is good, though with public subsidy I'd like to see additional reforms regulating local press as non-profit/charitable orgs with a shared credo guaranteeing editorial independence. More money for ReachPLC is just strengthening an existing media bohemoth

What we need is a deprofessionalisation of Westminster politics, re-establishing the principle that parties are there to put real people, with experience outside the Westminster bubble, into office. But the social infrastructure which once sustained that model isn't there anymore

Today all that would happen is the same clique of out touch centrist wonks (replete with their unbelievably reduced standards of oratory & natural communicative styles) would hoover up the seats & turbo-charge the crisis of legitmacy our entire democratic system presently faces

Only half right IMO. The reason we used to get better politicians is because the party system used to reflect real social organisation/political philosophies in wider society; now it's an ouroboros of Oxbridge grads. Reducing localist focus in this context will only worsen things

Spot on. We’ve come to fetishise “local representatives” far too much, a symptom of our politics becoming smaller and more parochial. What we need is quality national politicians. If they have to be “parachuted” in, and they spend more time in SW1 than the constituency, so be it.

“…the dynamics have inverted: asset appreciation now outweighs productive investment…The result is an urban anti-growth machine: a decentralized but powerful coalition of homeowners, landlords, neighborhood associations, & local officials that blocks new construction.”

@GoodwinMJ This is just about the only thing Keir Starmer has done right. Is British 'sovereignity' just a fig leaf to you to cover for vassalage to the USA? What a scam.

What we are witnessing in real time is the breakdown of the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. Without any doubt Keir Starmer will go down as one of the worst prime ministers in our country’s history.

Hannah Spencer taking a very proactive approach to her new role as MP for Gorton and Denton. Have seen her visiting businesses on Stockport Road and stopping for a chat with local people.

RT @DespoticInroad: This is an excellent piece on Gorton & Denton. Includes great tonic for the notion common among the non-Mancunian Left…

‘“Shameless” presented life on the Chatsworth estate as obsolete, a trap which imprisoned its residents.’ In a sea of poverty porn, the BBC portrayed the harsh realities of life on the breadline without resorting to tired tropes, writes @cfwinstanley 👇 buff.ly/hGnxCVU

‘“Chavs” are now the backbone of a new English nativism’. The fact they’re being courted by Thatcherites shows how much British Right has transformed, argues @cfwinstanley👇 buff.ly/hGnxCVU

Shameless showed community, solidarity & inter-generational mutual aid networks of noughties council estate life. Yet the Gorton estate it was filmed was bulldozed by the Labour Council. Here's me on how that influences dynanics r.e. by-election in G&D. unherd.com/2026/02/the-re…

Chavs were everywhere in the mid-noughties, from Vicky Pollard to ‘Benefits Street’. No TV show of the era bothered to humanise Britain’s ‘underclass’: except the BBC’s ‘Shameless’. @cfwinstanley👇 buff.ly/hGnxCVU
