Let me introduce you to Virgil Lamar Ware. He was an eighth-grader, an A student who loved to play football. Virgil had a bright future. He dreamed of becoming a lawyer. All those hopes and dreams ended on September 15, 1963. The day he was gunned down in the aftermath of the Birmingham church bombing. Virgil and his brother were returning home, totally unaware that the bombing had occurred. They encountered Larry Joe Sims and Michael Lee Farley, two sixteen-year-olds coming from a segregationist rally. When the white teens saw the Ware brothers, Farley told Sims to shoot, to “scare them.” Sims shot Virgil twice, once in the cheek and once in the chest. The 13-year-old died on the Docena-Sandusky Road on the outskirts of Birmingham. Young Virgil was buried on the side of the road up until 2004 when he was moved to a plot with a marker thanks to donations. Republicans want to hide this history. History is history. DeSantis cited “white discomfort” I experience discomfort knowing that DeSantis and the likes don’t want Black history taught. Black children were and are casualties of racism. It’s a fact. @donlemonofficial was arrested by federal agents last night in Los Angeles while covering the Grammy Awards. He faces federal charges under the FACE Act and the KKK Act for allegedly interfering with religious freedom at a Minnesota church on January 18, when anti-ICE protesters disrupted a Sunday service. Don has been a journalist for 30 years doing constitutionally protected work. His attorney, Abbe Lowell, calls this an “unprecedented attack on the First Amendment.” Don maintains he was there solely as a journalist covering the protest. The chief federal judge in Minneapolis already rejected these charges for lack of probable cause. Now the Trump Justice Department has obtained a grand jury indictment and arrested him anyway. This is the question: Is covering a protest the same as participating in it? The First Amendment exists to protect journalists like Don who hold power accountable. We stand with him.
