if we actually want to build these AI data centers, we need better names. I’ve been lurking in anti-data center activist groups and forums trying to understand what peoples’ concerns are. One thing that stood out is how fixated people are on the “data” part of data centers. It immediately triggers associations with surveillance, control and privacy invasion. So why not come up with some other innocuous, euphemistic ways to rebrand “data centers?” It’s like how the restaurant industry renamed dolphinfish by calling it Mahi-Mahi. Sounds exotic and distinctly un-mammalian. Some examples: compute hubs, knowledge engines, innovation nodes It just sounds like shared public resources that benefits all.

@AngelicaOung Angelica it has been really strange following you years ago for interesting nuclear energy content, and then seeing you pivot to pro-China pro-Iran handwringing. I have no idea if you’re sincere or a psyop, but the arc has been remarkable.

Oh my god I’m so shook right now. I read that years ago and assumed it was all true. But apparently Marjane Satrapi made a lot of shit up in Persepolis. That scene where they give children plastic keys to heaven to get them to fight in the war? Apparently that didn’t happen. When you read a semifictional work like that somehow it seems to have its own authority. You’re told you’re reading someone’s story. You felt their feelings. But it can just be all made up! And the horrible things about Iran they made up make ppl in the west feel justify in doing horrible things to Iran to « free » the Iranian people. So many layers of horrible.
شرق‌زده sharghzadeh@sharghzadeh

Marjane Satrapi's work is orientalist garbage for Whites. Everything I've seen from her is cringe and anti-Iran propaganda.

@MsMelChen just when I couldn't love you any more. 1000% agree and my friends are always subjected to rants about this. Not to mention that the computerization murdered our ability to work on cars, which had been a staple of american male life for decades.

Does anyone actually enjoy driving a new car? I recently had to rent one and my god, the experience of driving it was total horse shit. I can't be the only one. There must be arbitrage opportunities for anyone who only sells / rents cars made between the golden age of 1980s - 2002. Even a car made 10 years ago is SIGNIFICANTLY better than a brand new one. Seriously, stop scrapping old cars! They are gems. I thought we were in for a pleasant drive on winding country roads nestled in the Tuscan mountains in a supposedly top-of-the-line Alfa Romeo. Instead, on this type of road, the whistles and beeps are just incessant and the steering interventions which are mandatory features that can't be turned off, are downright DANGEROUS. I don't want lane departure warnings, I don't want lane keep assists that lock my steering wheel into place. I don't want my car to angrily hiss at me every time I go above the bloody speed limit. I don't want automatic braking because I know better than the car. And yes, "everything is computer" these days and IT SUCKS THE SOUL OUT OF DRIVING. I don't want to fiddle with huge touch screens on the dashboard when physical knobs are just easier and safer to deal with. I don't want the transmission computer and engine computer and cooling system to continuously be in an existential crisis and sometimes, inexplicably, fails to respond, respond incorrectly, or just outright fails. I don't want smaller and smaller engines in cars that are made with significantly more plastic by weight and volume in the name of fuel efficiency. I don't want a utilitarian hunk of plastic with advanced infotainment and spyware on wheels that is a total piece of CRAP. Whenever people tell me that technology just makes everything better I just scoff because it's not true for automobiles. Maybe that makes me a dinosaur or whatever but I will cling to my old gas guzzling clunkers from decades ago for as long as I can.

@AngelicaOung At a moment notice, Europe can go into Valhalla mode. Odin will conjure factories out of nowhere, factories that are powered by Thor's hammer. Everyone will know how to operate the machineries and raw materials/components will magically appear from nothing. DO NOT DOUBT THEM.

I’ve repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly come across this attitude from Europeans. Some weird coy « you won’t like us when we’re mad… » It’s as if Europe is John Wick and Ukraine is John Wicks dog and now big bad Putin shot the dog Europe is going to go on the most incredible, kino, melee of bloodshed in revenge. Something primal and ancestral will be unleashed. I’m just not sure that’s how military power works tho. Am I missing something? Is there really a berserker factory setting that I’m not taking into account?
Otto Kopra@Slagblah

@AngelicaOung Good luck to you too. Previously when Europe has begun to throw hands in scale, everyone got to have bad times. Feh, I was hoping someone else would've done the next world war, but here we go again...

Seems like the thing to do when someone sends you a nice private note expressing compassion is to say thanks and move on
Variety@Variety

J.K. Rowling calls Emma Watson "ignorant" and says the #HarryPotter actor once sent her a note expressing sympathy amid the anti-trans backlash Rowling was receiving, even though Watson had already spoke out against the author. "Emma asked someone to pass on a handwritten note from her to me, which contained the single sentence 'I'm so sorry for what you're going through' (she has my phone number). This was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family's safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness. Like other people who've never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she's ignorant of how ignorant she is. She'll never need a homeless shelter. She's never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward. I'd be astounded if she's been in a high street changing room since childhood... I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges." @tom_jiahao I think they are *less* complex, but don't have easy technological shortcuts. For vision and hearing, which gather sound/light information, there ended up being easy ways to do that with electronics/computation. Olfaction is harder, and touch requires full-body mechanosensation.

Touch -> smell/taste -> balance -> hearing -> vision. This is the evolutionary order in which biological senses developed. The engineering difficulty roughly follows the reverse order. Vision is pretty easy now. But touch and smell are incredibly hard. Perhaps what took longer to develop are just a lot more complex (more hierarchies, more neural development, etc.)?

I totally despise the trend to redesign flags. The original designs appeal to smart, curious people who take the time to learn local history. Redesigns are yet another example of the total slopification of culture in order to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Truly absurd. Judges as website editors!? We should at least ATTEMPT to fire this junky jurist. The notion of having a judge job for life, no matter how bad the judgments, is ridiculous! Enough is enough.

@tracewoodgrains @ax3i0hm Speaking for myself, ‘ethnic cleansing’ is like 99% overlap with ‘genocide’. When you hear that phrase, it’s pretty much implied that the means of cleansing is murder. ^ not saying that’s the literal meaning, just offering that as a data point

awhile back I was surprised by pushback when I referred to forced displacement as “ethnic cleansing” in another context it denotatively means forced removal and connotatively means Very Bad, leading many to feel odd when you use it to mean forced removal rather than genocide
Daniel@growing_daniel

I see people label proposals to relocate Gazans “ethnic cleaning” which for me conjures up murdering tons of people but actually this proposal seems to involve way less death. Idk the technicalities of these things but less death seems like the goal regardless of semantics.
