The "purpose" of doing artist alley and the "purpose" of drawing doujinshi, unless you're super successful, are completely different. If you do artist alley, you calculate prices based on your time and labor. If you always lose money doing it, you usually either optimize or quit.

I'm going to say this gently as someone who has also done artist alley for ten years, working very hard to make very slim profits. Japan and Asia are not robust and affluent compared to the US. Purchasing power there is much lower. Doujinshi is simply different from artist alley.

I'm a little sad that there are people out there who think artists alley in the west is some greedy profit machine that doesnt care about the art itself, we would love to make doujins and niche interests but we work two jobs and my mother's health insurance bill is $1000 a month
