Unfortunately, content creators are at the mercy of the platform algos, which demand consistent and constant uploads. Which is why the high quality content people want is disappearing. In the same turn, the people who want that higher quality content aren't willing to pay for it to cover the difference. Meanwhile, AI content that I would agree is definitely slop constantly gets highlighted on those platforms and makes those 'creators' a bunch of money, encouraging others to do the same. It's not enough to complain about it, people need to stop giving that content attention or even avoid the platforms that recommend them completely.

@champlification @hankgreen @paul_cal … going to result in shit. That’s the end of it. I imagine their audience feels the same way about it. A large quantity of content isn’t the same thing as one well-made piece of work.

Machine learning and neural networks have been around for quite a while, and no one really cared that researchers/data scientists/etc. were using them. LLMs (ChatGPT, etc.) are just pre-trained neural networks that everyone has access to. Suddenly everyone calls all machine learning 'AI' and everyone is against the use of AI. 🤷

@eattherich6969_ @hankgreen @paul_cal The point is to not be one-dimensional. People can use AI (to whatever degree) within their workflows to produce good, accurate content. People can also use AI to create slop. It comes down to the person using the AI, not just the use of AI itself.

@DanielLoganPDX @hankgreen @paul_cal Agreed. It comes down to how he's using the AI. The mere use of AI doesn't inform us whether or not the data he's presenting is bad or not. The use of AI is not inherently bad, it's how it's used.

@champlification @hankgreen @paul_cal A big issue though is if he’s going off of the AI generated notes rather than using it to find sources to do his own notes from, he’s probably missing information if not getting entirely false info.

Tools that don't work don't get used. It's definitely working for some people. People are spending a lot of money on AI tokens, and people are making money with all kinds of AI slop. If it's truly not working, the only way to fix it is for people to stop using the platforms that show the slop, so the slop no longer makes money.

Who judges if the money spent hiring writers and researches is more ethical than giving that same money away to whatever his philanthropy is about? But yeah, again, that's not really outlining all of his income/expenses for me to judge whether or not he has the money to hire people

Did you trust the research Hank did before he used AI? Do you believe that he fact checked the research and validated it against other trusted sources (when possible) to present the most accurate data he could? Why would you not think that he would give the same scrutiny to research presented by AI? The issue isn't necessarily that he used AI. The issue is whether or not he does due diligence to ensure the information he's presenting is accurate, regardless of where it comes from.

@champlification @hankgreen @paul_cal It’s not the same thing. Him claiming to use it for research, and claiming to use it for scripting videos are two different things. Let’s not pretend AI is know for its quality, it’s known for its efficiency.

@Graine_01 @hankgreen @paul_cal AI is definitely being used more and more in education. I do agree that there is some hypocrisy regarding the environmental aspect.

@champlification @hankgreen @paul_cal Its a tool that is on average wrong atleast 20% of the timeand he is posing as an educator. It is also a tool that creates extreme polution per querry, and hank numerous times posed himself as enviroment advocate. What bugs people is the double standard and hypocricy.

@LiamMcCue32 @hankgreen @paul_cal I think it's easy to assume that people make more money than they really do. I don't know him personally, so I don't know how much money he brings in or how much his other expenses are for everything.

@LiamMcCue32 @hankgreen @paul_cal I don't know his financial situation, but maybe the people that want to stop him from utilizing AI could pay him more for his content so he can afford to pay script writers and researchers.

Depends on the person using it. You can provide it links to grab data from or ask it to grab data from specific places, or even just provide it the research papers yourself. You can also request it to provide you the sources it used to gather that data so you can review and validate its claims. Just depends on how you use it.

The same could be said for anyone that used a typewriter instead of writing by hand, or printing copies of something. Same could be said of someone using vehicle transportation to go from one place to another instead of just walking. You are lazy for using anything created to make your life easier.

@Ro210P @hankgreen @paul_cal Based on that comment, it's safe to assume that you have no idea what AI is being used for or where it's being used. Most likely, you are enjoying something that utilized AI in its creation and don't even know it.

The LLMs generate/create output, regardless of what that output is. Outputting research data is the same as outputting a script for him to follow in his videos. The difference is what data is provided to the LLM, and what it's tasked to do. I'm not assuming how much or little he uses AI in his workflows.

A tool is as good or bad as the person using it. Just because you haven't been able to use it well, or haven't noticed (from what you could tell) anyone else using well, doesn't mean that there aren't people skilled at using AI to create good things. You just only notice the bad.
