🗣 Calling on all running enthusiasts, athletes and anyone who’s down for a healthy dose of fun, in an effort to raise awareness on anaphylaxis- an allergic condition that debilitates many lives in Sri Lanka- and funds for adrenalin autoinjectors for patients with anaphylaxis! 🗣

While the emergence of NB.1.8.1 is notable, there is currently no cause for alarm. Continued vigilance and adhere to public health guidelines MOH.

Continue regular handwashing and mask wearing if you are unwell, would be key in mitigating the spread of COVID-19.

A new COVID-19 variant known as NB.1.8.1 is contributing to a resurgence of cases globally. This variant, a sublineage of Omicron, has been designated a “Variant Under Monitoring” by the @WHO was first identified in January 2025 and has since been detected in multiple countries.

Our genomic analysis shows 2025 Sri Lankan CHIKV strain belongs to the Indian Ocean lineage, with mutations (E1:K211E, E2:V264A) enhancing fitness in Aedes aegypti. Unique changes (nsP3:T224I, nsP4:S90A) may boost transmission efficiency—raising critical public health concerns.

We are happy to share our new study on the ongoing Chikungunya outbreak in Sri Lanka—coinciding with the CDC issuing a travel warning. Genomic data reveals a mutated strain with enhanced mosquito transmission potential. Read more: cidrap.umn.edu/chikungunya/cd…

Preventive action and awareness remain key to avoiding a resurgence.

At the same time COVID19 cases are rising across Southeast Asia driven by JN.1 and LP.8.1 variants. Most infections remain mild, but surges seen in Singapore, Thailand, and India. No major increase in Sri Lanka yet—stay alert, not alarmed.

@WHO The adoption of the Pandemic Agreement by the World Health Assembly is a landmark step toward global health solidarity. It acknowledges the hard lessons of COVID-19 and aims to build a more coordinated, transparent, and equitable response framework for future pandemics.
