Had the opportunity to participate in the launch of the book “Galle Face People’s Struggle or the Regime Change Movement 2022” held today at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. The event reflected on the 2022 people’s movement, its political and social implications, and the broader conversation surrounding democracy, governance, and civic engagement in Sri Lanka. It was a meaningful gathering that brought together diverse perspectives to revisit an important chapter in the country’s recent history. #Aragalaya #SriLanka #RegimeChange #BookLaunch #Democracy #PublicDialogue #SocialChange #charitha_herath

Sri Lanka’s political landscape is gradually entering a phase of clearer ideological definition, with the emergence of a stronger and more coherent centrist space. As highlighted in this analysis, the SJB under Sajith Premadasa is increasingly being positioned within a social democratic and progressive-centrist framework offering a balanced alternative between market-led liberal economic approaches and left-populist political narratives. This shift reflects more than political positioning. It signals an effort to build a principled, policy-driven opposition grounded in economic growth with social justice, stronger democratic governance, and inclusive development. The article also notes the importance of bringing together diverse reform-oriented voices to strengthen this centrist space, reinforcing the idea that Sri Lanka’s political future must move toward broader consensus-building rather than polarization. A timely reflection on how the opposition space is evolving and how a social democratic vision is shaping a more defined political identity for the SJB.  Read more: ft.lk/columns/Politi… #SriLankanPolitics #Governance #PoliticalReform #EconomicDevelopment #Leadership #SocialJustice #SJB #charitha_herath

A remarkable crowd and a powerful message at yesterday’s SJB May Day rally. Under the leadership of Hon. Sajith Premadasa, with strong senior leadership and organization, we demonstrated the people’s strength. We highlighted the government’s double standards between policy promises and actions. In my address, I called on all center-left and national-minded citizens to unite with us for the betterment of our country.

This is a government run by a cartel. The middle class was deceived by this cartel government. Our neighbors were also misled, and we need to bring them back to us. It should be remembered that the only force capable of building the open and broad consensus needed for this political effort is the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).We must clearly and thoughtfully explain to the country’s middle class that Sajith Premadasa is the only viable path for development, economic reform, and political reform. At the same time, it is important to emphasize that our movement remains open to leftist, centrist, and nationalist perspectives in this country.— Charitha Herath (remarks made at the Samagi Jana Balawegaya May Day rally)

I heard that the Finance Secretary will not appear before COPF in Parliament on the 30th, as reportedly informed to the COPF Chair. The reason given, it seems, is that he wishes to wait until the President addresses Parliament on the same issue. This is utterly unparliamentary and unconstitutional. No ministry secretary should take such a position. Public finance is a subject of Parliament, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance is constitutionally bound to respond to summons issued by parliamentary oversight committees. He may, of course, request a different date for valid reasons such as health concerns. However, stating that he cannot appear before Parliament until the Executive President makes an address is a serious mistake and sets a troubling precedent. Such actions undermine parliamentary accountability and democratic governance. Only in a banana republic should this be considered acceptable.
Harsha de Silva@HarshadeSilvaMP

ST has informed me now that he is not able to present himself at the Committee on Public Finance tomorrow to discuss the issues regarding the missing USD 2.5m. This is unacceptable as the Constitution of #SriLanka places full control of public Finance with Parliament and by standing order COPF is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for OVERSIGHT on DEBT REPAYMENT among many other important matters. Thus, him being summoned is not an act of discretion but a constitutional duty of the Committee. He has to answer questions by the committee. And he had the opportunity to put the ‘record straight’ if by any chance he was being wrongly accused. But why is he running away? What is there to hide? As the incumbant ST he has a responsibility. He must fulfil that responsibility or if he cannot, he must give it to someone who can. This is also personal to him since he is the first ever politician to occupy this important civil service position; he sat as an MP of the JVP/NPP government and even as a member of our Committee till the day before this appointment. This high handed act shows total lack of respect for the parliamentary system of checks and balances that is so critical post-crisis [that is why the COPF is chaired by a member of the opposition since the 2022 meltdown]. It is a kick in the face of the promised ‘system change’ the people of this country voted for. It is also a breakdown of the undertaking to @IMFNews on governance. His excuse is that President will address Parliament next week and he can come by thereafter. That is not acceptable and unrelated.

The latest revelations regarding the coal procurement issue raise deeply concerning questions about governance and institutional integrity in Sri Lanka. Allegations that there may have been attempts to influence the Auditor General’s process — including possible intervention linked to senior state officials — go beyond a single incident. They point to a broader systemic concern. Public financial oversight mechanisms such as COPE and the Auditor General’s Department exist precisely to ensure transparency and accountability. Any perception of interference in such processes undermines public trust and weakens the credibility of institutions. As highlighted, issues around coal procurement have already raised concerns about lack of transparency, weak oversight, and financial losses in the energy sector. The key question is not just about who is responsible, but whether our institutional frameworks are strong enough to withstand political pressure. Accountability cannot function selectively. Institutional independence cannot be conditional. This moment calls for clarity, transparency, and above all, respect for the rule of law. New Year at my Katugampola home… It always feels fresh and new. Perhaps that is the beauty of places rooted in memory. Though the house itself is ancestral, shaped by time and generations, it never feels old. There is a quiet renewal in its spaces — the free air that flows through, the calm that settles in, and the simplicity that allows one to truly relax. In a world that constantly changes, some places remain — not frozen in the past, but quietly renewing themselves with us.

The International Monetary Fund just cut its global growth outlook to 3.1%. Not a crisis—but far from healthy. With downside scenarios near 2%, the margin for error is razor thin. Slow growth is the base case. Fragility is the real story.
Gita Gopinath@GitaGopinath

IMF’s reference forecast for the world economy is out. Global growth lowered to 3.1% There are more adverse scenarios where global growth falls to 2%. Let’s hope we don’t get there.

පරණ අවුරුද්දේ... පරණ පොතක් ගැන මතක සටහනක් “Nuthana Kumaraya” – Rethinking Politics Beyond Illusions In Nuthana Kumaraya (The Modern Prince), Prof. Charitha Herath offers a sharp and intellectually grounded intervention into Sri Lanka’s contemporary political discourse. This is not merely a collection of essays—it is a sustained attempt to rethink politics through the lenses of power, ideology, and culture. Drawing inspiration from Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince and later reinterpreted through Antonio Gramsci’s idea of the “modern prince,” the book situates Sri Lankan politics within a broader philosophical tradition. It reminds us that politics cannot be reduced to moral rhetoric alone, but must be understood as a field shaped by power relations, institutional practices, and cultural forces. At its core, Nuthana Kumaraya is a critique of post-2015 political developments in Sri Lanka. The essays reflect on governance failures, ideological inconsistencies, and the fragmentation of traditional political formations such as the SLFP. More importantly, they attempt to expose how narratives of reform and “good governance” often mask deeper structural contradictions. What makes this work particularly significant is its attention to the cultural dimension of politics. Echoing Gramsci, Herath suggests that political transformation cannot occur without engaging with the cultural and intellectual fabric of society. Politics, therefore, is not only about institutions and elections, but also about meanings, identities, and hegemonic struggles. The book can also be read as a series of interventions—responses to real-time political debates rather than abstract theorizing. This gives the text a certain urgency and relevance, making it both analytical and engaged. Ultimately, Nuthana Kumaraya challenges the reader to rethink what kind of “prince” modern Sri Lanka needs—not a ruler in the traditional sense, but a political force capable of understanding power, culture, and society in a more nuanced and transformative way. #NuthanaKumaraya #CharithaHerath #SriLankaPolitics #PoliticalPhilosophy #Governance #Gramsci #Machiavelli #ContemporaryPolitics
